Well I bought a new project
1986 YN63 1st Gen 4Y(under)Powered 4Runner
2237cc 5speed 142,200 kilometres in need of love, its completely rust free, there isn't a mark or scratch underneath which makes me think it's seen very little off road use at all.
(I'll use the term "POS" alot with this build, don't be alarmed its not me calling it a piece of excrement it's actually a reference to "Previous Owner's Sins")
This will be picture heavy thread !!
So my 3VZ-E has a stablemate
[IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
I'm currently in the process of getting it ready for it's registration inspection before I pull it back of the road for a couple of mod's !
I have quite a bit to get done in the next 2 weeks, the car has been parked up in a shed for the last 4 years, the previous owner lost interest and just let it deteriorate to its current state!
What I found so far is the rear pinion seal is completely stuffed, so its out
[IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
The rear axle seals are cactus too ! So there out
[IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
1st POS found
[IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
I'll carefully massage the damage with the Dremel, The PO really belted the crap out of the housing grrrr !
Consequently the rear brake shoes are toast and being replaced as are the axle bearings
[IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
Both Outer CV Boots are stuffed
[IMG]
[/IMG]
I thought about just replacing the boots, but decided to replace both drive shafts as complete units as well as the wheel bearings, if I'd known just what a "pita" cracking the 6 bolts on each side was going to be I might have just replaced the CV boots only.
No matter how much Rattle Gunning I tried, I couldn't undo even 1 of the 12 nuts, I had to resort to the old fashioned Breaker Bar and length of Pipe to get these off.
[/IMG]
Additionally I have replaced the combination switch on the steering column, I turned the headlights on and smoke started coming out of the steering column surround, 2nd POS - splicing in a set of driving lights and not bothering to insulate the joint.
I drove up to Sydney on Tuesday and bought a power train upgrade that should satisfy my need for zoom
So once the registrations inspection is passed and its legally back on the road its bye bye to the 4Y-C
[IMG]
[/IMG]
And in with it's replacement
[IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
I'm not sure whether you guys in the states get this model, its a 2000 Toyota Celsior 1UZ VVTi
I'll be stripping the 4Runner engine bay bare other than fuel and brake lines everything else goes, the dash will also be completely stripped and I'll graft everything out of the Front Cut into the 4Runner. I'm trying to avoid all the heartache that everyone seems to have splicing old to new, I'm hoping a strip and replace is a easier way to proceed !

Oh hell yeah!!!
What are road laws line in NSW for engine swaps? Do you need it to get engineered? Does anyone solid axle swap 4Runners in Oz? With all those Landcruisers around I thought it might be something that really isn't done much.

Yes, if the motor capacity is increased by more than 10% then it has to be engineered. Once you go past the 10%, then a whole heap of other factors are also stipulated including brakes and suspension to cope with the added power, additionally you must improve on the pollution control by using a later model motor.
NSW Road and Maritime - Vehicle Standards PDF's for Modifications
There are a few SAS's done, but I don't think to anywhere near the extent that it appears you guys over there do !!

Did a little bit more on the Runner today!
Tried unsuccessfully to remove the front drive shafts, I thought I could get them out without removing the hubs and brake discs, if I get time tomorrow, I'll try again by removing the sway bar and shock absorbers to see if I can sneak them out, so close to getting them out but not close enough yet.... I thought I could cheat, but we'll see !
[/IMG]
Cleaned up the Pinion Flange in preparation for installing the new Pinion Seal
[IMG]
[/IMG]
On closer inspection I'm a little concerned about the score marks on the flange, they are barely discernible to the touch, but are clearly obvious visually, I'm not sure whether I should replace the Pinion Flange as well, any feedback/suggestions from you guys would be appreciated ??
[/IMG]
Cleaned up the Rear Axles and Drum Brakes, took a bit of elbow grease and degreaser.
The Drums look fantastic, no marks or scores, spun them up in the lathe and the runout was less than 0.005mm so they won't need machining.
[/IMG]
I'll drop the Axles in at a local workshop on Monday, as I don't have a press to remove the old bearings & install the replacements.
[/IMG]
I've been trying to work out why the auto choke wasn't working, I think I've diagnosed what's causing my cold start issues.
POS #3 someone has removed the choke butterfly from the Carb... grrrr

Thanks for the info. My wife is from the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. She'll be wanting to go home in a few years so it's nice to have that info. I'm a dual citizen having lived in Melbourne and then Perth to work in the mines.
What made you pick 4Runners over the ridiculous amount of awesome Landcruiser choices you have? I think I'll get an FJ40 upon my return to the land down unda. I also want to bring a big F350 back with me. I'll use it as a recovery vehicle/work truck.
That will be fun to have there. I can show all you guys why we call them trucks not utes. I'll be a taking up some road space for sure.
I look forward to seeing how your new baby turns out!
When it has to be engineered can you do any of the work yourself?

I just actually prefer the 4Runners, + Cruisers are twice the price & IMO they aren't twice the truck !! As for "F" series trucks, there are plenty of them over here F100's & F150's are a dime a dozen, we actually had a F150 as a tow vehicle, but it was a guzzler fuel wise & with the price of fuel over here I'm not sure you'll enjoy driving an F350 over here, if you import one with you make sure its a diesel as you'll get a far better return when you sell it !!
Yes you can do all the work yourself, but any work you do must satisfy the signatory engineer that its quality work, if they signed off on any mod that wasn't up to the expected standard they'd loose their accreditation, they're actually anal to the point of being ridiculous about satisfying the standard....
Mini Update:
Front drive shafts are out & new carburetor is ordered !!

Wow that 4runner was abused. Looks like the previous owners only maintenance was to fill the gas tank.
Is that a larger gas tank that the rear pinion sprayed all over or a homemade skid plate?
Looks like it hangs really low.
The 1UZ will motivate the 4Runner nicely

Fuel prices in Canada are similar, and we work in the resources sector.
I remember seeing older F150's but manyany new ones. I'll have a look at what's available. It will have to be driver side swapped anyway as it will be modern.
ahhh

I also just looked at F150's for sale used. I found a 2003 for $55,000. I bought my 2004 F150 for $6000.
The math is telling me to bring one or two home.

I'll bring a 250 though or perhaps a Ram? I want a solid axle work truck in Oz. Good advice on the diesel, I'll be taking it.
Sorry for the thread derail. I'm looking forward to wheeling Australia. I'll head back out West to check out the Kimberlies. I worked right next to them but never got the chance to live the hole in the ground to see it.

Yea I'm really hopeful that the 1UZ gives the 4Runner a big kick in the pants, this and my Gen 2 4Runner are painfully slow when I jump from my twin turbo daily driver into them !!
LoL, Hab I'm just trying to keep up with you !!
Today's Update:
Rear Axles dropped off, to press the bearings off and the new ones on, will be picking them up tomorrow afternoon.
My new front drive shafts we're delivered late this afternoon, if I get a chance tomorrow after work I'll install them.

Hiya Terry,
Yea it's been a while, lots to do, LOTS. No progress today, daylight saving is over and the days are getting shorter quickly !!
As usual, I see your ploughing through your projects.....

Picked up the rear axles after work on Thursday afternoon, planning on installing them on good friday, I wished I had a good look at them before I left the workshop.....
No problems with this one !!
Ignore the hair everywhere, one of my cockers thinks the axles make a great place to curl up & have a sleep
[IMG]
[/IMG]
And here's my lil dilemma, where's the circlip groove, bearing not pressed on correctly !
[/IMG]
Given that it's easter, the workshop won't be open till Tuesday
My brake shoes arrived on thursday!
[/IMG]
My flimsy battery tie down (0.8mm thick) won't cut the mustard at roadworthy inspection.
[/IMG]
So I have started to fabricate something a little more heavy duty !!

Yes the first one is perfect, circlip fits in groove no worries.
The second one is at least 2mm short of where it needs to be, this find was accompanied with some un-ladylike language, more than a little pissed !!!!!!!!
As for my battery tie-down, thanks, just cutting the material for a matching one for when I get round to doing the dual battery mod !!

I love my parcel post lady !!!
Just delivered my new Carburettor, which means I have some work to do today !!

Probably a bit of a waste replacing the Carburettor, but I need the Car running properly for its Registration Inspection, the new carb is allegedly pre-tuned & should be a straight bolt on turn key VROOOOM..... we'll see

Ski Season..... Last 2 weeks of August booked into our favourite Chalet in Thredbo....... hopefully lots a fresh snow to carve !!
When I got to the workshop, they hadn't even started on fixing there oversight, so no axle work today......
I can't complain about how Izzy's sleeps normally 2-3 hour daytime sleep everyday, I'll miss the break when she stops her daytime nap's......

on the bearing pressing situation. Is there enough groove showing on the one axle for the circlip to slip in place?
