Jeff H's 84 X-cab Build thread

so i think my 4runner is in too nice of shape to beat up anymore so i went and bought this 84 extra cab last night, runs great and has cold a/c i figured the cab, motor, tranny and axle are worth the 600 i paid for it but the frame is shot to hell so i have to do a frame swap and i cant do that till july 4th when my mom is at the beach so she dont kill me for tearing apart a truck in her front yard

got to love angle iron and metal ties holding your frame together

sorry about the bad pics i have to use my cell phone because my dog ate my camera but ill have to get a pic of the side view you can see the frame sagging and the flat bed leaning aginst the cab holding everything together haha and also i drove this thing home 3 hours after i bought it, im in college so i dont know how fast this build will be but i broke up with my girlfriend about a month ago and its amazing how much more money i have now

to do list-
frame swap
RUF
chevies in rear
rattle can paint job
hysteer with hydro assist
5.29s with locked f and r
find good deal on irocks or pbrs
custom flat bed

wish list-
4 link in rear
arbs

Whoa! I'm thinking you could find a later model truck and use that one for parts!

thought about that but i found a 84 4runner frame today for 100 so the 200 ill spend on the frame, ruf and chevies are going to be a lot less then finding a later model and using this one for parts, and the cab and interier on here are really not that bad

hope you realize 4runner body mounts will be bit different that the truck body mounts. but if your not afraid to do a frame swap then changing body mounts wont be that bad.

I dont know about using a 4runner frame, but doing a swap with an exact rolling frame (with axles) really isnt bad at all. I just used basic tools (no air tools) and I had it done in 3 days with a total of 28 hours. I only had help lifting the cab. Used 4 sawhorses and 2 4x4s to support the cab. Air tools would be nice though. I did spend a day prepping and painting the frame. Good luck.

yeah the bed mounts seem to be the same, i just eye checked the mounts with my 4runner and they seem the same the and bed mounts im not worried about because i am going custom tube bed,
but the frame is aweful, looks like the old guy who had it just let it sit in a field for months at a time, and it has had a wanta be patch job done but it was realllllly bad done he just slapped some 1/4 steel on and tak welded in a couple places, should be going to get the frame sometime withen this week so be ready for lots of pictures because i bought a new camera today and im ready to try it out

yeah the frame swap might be a pain but its what i wanted in a toy so it should be fun to build, and im thinking it will give me a good chance to clean and rust proof the new frame, clean and rust proof my axles and weld my ruf and 63s also going to be able to clean up and engine and tranny and rust proof the bottom of the cab so all in all i think the work will be worth it
also here is my runner that i think is too pretty to keep beating
