Pulling the motor

I bought an engine stand off craigslist for $30 and used the bucket on my dad's tractor to pull the motor.

Lots of parts

I made sure to put everything in ziplock bags and label as I took it apart

Condition

Most everything seems to be in good working order as far as I can tell

Valves seemed really really loose. Almost 1/4" gap on some of them.

The bad

I don't think this is good haha. But any idea what would cause it?
And this must have been what was clunking?

Broken pieces off #1 piston.
Broken ring on #2 piston.
Bores look ok.

All shined up

Picked it up from the machine shop.
Cylinders bored .020"
Crank and main bearing .010"
Decked the head and got rid of some of those melted piston chunks haha.
Ground the valve seats form me.
Hot tank clean block.
$325
Also ordered the master rebuild kit and stock valves from engnbldr. $350
Kit should be here next week and I'll start assembling.
Until then I'm cleaning parts.

Any help appreciated

Like I said it's my first time doing this so if anyone has tips, advice, or suggestions I'm all ears!
Any particular parts I should replace while I'm at it?
Still don't know what caused it to go in the first place.

Currently about to do the same thing to my 4runner in a few months. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you with no prior engine rebuilding experience. Are you going to use that head? I think it might just be safer to buy another one without the pitting..

I think you are right 84yotadude. Unfortunately I don't have the money for a new head so I'm going to reuse this one until I can save up a little.
Also it's an early 22r and the heads are hard to come by in Texas. No shortage of late 22r heads.

Thanks toyospearo!
Love both your trucks.
I'm thinking of going with the same color down the road.
Waiting to see what you have in store for the first gen..

I think joelsmithdesigns has a reworked early 22R head? I may be wrong. Look him up, he's in Texas I believe.

Oh man! Sorry to hear about that.

The 22Re is one of the easiest and cheapest engines to rebuild. I am doing one right now with KelvinB. Check out his thread.

We just sent it off to get bored .030 over and new pistons/rings and was 225$ + freight.

If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me.

Guess I should have read a little further. Ha.

Glad to see that you are tearing into it.

Looks like when the ring broke, possibly a piece of it wedged in the cylinder causing the piston to chip out like that.
I have a 22Re in the storage that did the same thing.

I have a lot of pics and info on my build thread of when I put my engine together.

Make sure you Plasti-gauge the mains and rod bearings to check for oil clearance. That is a Must!

Engnbldr has some great kits. Thats who I used for most of my stuff. You could also get a Cam while you are in there. Make it run a little harder.

I think you will be surprised at the power difference after the rebuild. Will be like night and day.

Again.....Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
