yopar's 1983 Truck the Blue Project

Here's the 1983 truck I'm working on. 209k miles, 22R needs rebuild, doing a bunch of stuff to it. It has Marlin dual rotated dual cases w/ 4.7 in rear, Aussie 4.10 front & rear, 33x12.5 Goodyear MTR, homemade sliders.

Rear FROR flip kit, OME shocks and new set of rear OME springs in w/ 5" shackles. I might redrill them to 3.5" because I like the low style. We'll see, the springs need to be flexed out to settle.

Next is front suspension work:

Truck is in good shape:

Steering coming out:

Passenger side:

Monstaliner bed

Doing the bed up with Monstaliner. First grind down the rust spots, and use their Chassis Saver Silver paint.

Oh yea it's been bobbed already, nicely done, approx shortbed length.

Chassis Silver paint on:

Roll it over the corners to protect edges:

Took about 2 days of grinding and sanding, prepping and painting. Elbow grease and dust masks. Then another 2 days to do the Monstaliner, roll it on.

Tailgate back on:

Texture close up:

Tailgate close up, with brush on Interlux Brightside boat paint, "dark blue". This is what I will paint the whole truck with, and will roll that on too!

Front suspension

Creamy diff/birf goop. Got Marlins seals in the knuckle kit to go back in.

Look ma! No ax-kle!

Look ma! No brax-kets! ..... I decided to go hi steer.

Look ma! Smooth! .... I might also trim the lower pass pad down, enough to just hold the new U bolts.

Thanks guys!

Monstaliner is a roll on bedliner from Magnet Paints. The Chassis saver paint is like POR-15, and they also make many other types of industrial paint.

You can read about Monstaliner here:

nice to know im not the only one knee deep in toyota this 3 day weekend! looks like your getting your truck dialed in. i like how the front fenders are rounded into the front bumper, not just a straight cut. looks like im getting the cut-off wheel out!

Supposed to be pretty good. Got great reviews all over the place.

The previous owner did the fender trim and bed bob, a nice job. I am going to take a sanding wheel to the edges, because they're still a little sharp. Looks like he used a sawzall or jigsaw to do the fenders.

Housing work

Thanks everyone. Still working on the housing, it's taking longer than expected, lots of cutting grinding and time spent letting it cool when welding 1-2" passes.

I should get a close up of the finished bottom, but here's the diff armor and gussets on:

Still need to put the axle truss on, will do that tomorrow. And I have to weld the inside of the bottom shave plate. I ran out of MIG wire today, about 5 minutes after I thought to myself "hm, I wonder if I need wire soon".

Sky bling!

Still working on the housing.

Stitching up the truss. I cut drain holes on both sides because I'm leaving the end open. I used some cold galvanize primer under the welds on the inside.

Truss is on, it took several hours to do 1" welds, letting it cool. I'm drilling the perches 1 1/4" rearward to move the axle forward. Or maybe only 1". Thinking of these 1/4" thick plates to extend the surface area where the leaf spring touches, especially the driver side, when relocating the hole, this doesn't leave much pad for the spring, and then angle closing in the ends for support.

Yes that's the one! The PO is known over there and even more on Pirate, he does good work and was sad to see it go. I'll be swapping the tired 22R out, with Andrew's built 20R, he put his Mercedes turbo in his truck a few weeks ago. I'll keep the orig. 22 as a builder.
