My '82 build...

Well, I bought this 82 back in 2019. I had just started playing with it when we decided to buy another house. With much to do I stored in a buddy's barn until things settled down. Took four years for me to ready so I got her out storage. My plan is to do a full frame off restoration eventually but I want to drive it an enjoy it along the way. I figure in a couple years when I am fully retired, I'll go down the frame and start over. Here's what I'm starting with:

The day I brought her home from storage.

It need a new fuel pump and battery to get her going and today it runs like a champ.

The paint on most of the roof was gone and it had quite a bit of surface rust. I sanded it all away and coated it with some epoxy primer to protect the metal over winter.

Throwing some paint on there really showed me how many little dents the roof has. I'll get to those later.

Here's a link to dash pad rebuild. Figure I'll get a lot of the interior work done over winter.

The guy who stored the truck in his barn gave me these wheels and tires. Decent enough tread but they are over 20 years old and the rubber is hard as a rock. It could start snowing here any day and I think they would be way to slick. So I got me some brand new 33's. They look bad ass!

Also very exciting news, I just wired Corey at www.toyotafiberglass.com the money for my new fiberglass bed! Can't wait to get that however I won't be able to much to it until the weather warms up in spring. Too cold here to paint. Thanks Corey!

Exciting stuff! My bed from Corey arrived today. The lift gate on the delivery truck broke earlier in the day so I had a couple buddies come over so we could unload it. It's all covered now until I can get to it come Spring. Thanks again Corey, it looks amazing..

My girls tucked into the garage...

Got some 1/8' MDF and cut my panels. Installed the clips.

Thought I'd try this stuff to put under it for padding, and sound deadening.

Decided to go two tone so I added an extra layer on the upper 1/3 for a little extraz padding.

Lots of spray adhesive and it turned out pretty good. I like how the bubble wrap insulation gives it a textured look. Six hours on this one. Get to repeat tomorrow for the other side...

Got some used parts, cleaned them up and painted them with SEM Color Coat. That stuff is amazing. Also did my steering wheel.

Here's where I am now on the interior. Next summer when I pull the cab to do some repairs, I will paint all interior painted surfaces black. Figured black, brown and blue would clash. It's getting there. Also, my fiberglassed dash developed a hump in it. What I started with was pretty bad so I may have let it get too thin or something. Scored a nice black dash with one small crack in the front. Repaired the crack, cleaned it up and painted it. It looks amazing and like new.

Also, I got a carpet kit from ACC. The fit is worse than terrible. I would not recomment it. I installed an ACC kit in my IROC. The fit wasn't great but it was way better than this. I will post in the tech section to see if anyone knows of a better fitting kit. That's all for now.

Well that sucks, I have been combing threads for a good kit for my 91, what’s the problems with the kit you got? Just overall everything??

Hope you find something better, I have looked at quite a few over the years and I’m always hesitant as they aren’t super cheap.

Build is coming along good though!!

Thanks! It is way to big around the transmission hump. That's the biggest problem. I bought the carpet they sell with the extra sound deadening attached. Very thick and ridged. Overall, it sucks.

Yea, lame. I would spend a grand if Toyota still made it….but now we’re stuck with mediocre aftermarket crap. Well if you end up finding a better replacement let us know. Maybe someone will chime in on another option.

@slacker May have some options, or manufacturers he’s familiar with??

Did you try complaining to ACC? I once ordered ACC vinyl for my 85 from ebay...seemed legit, wasn't especially cheap, came in an ACC box. Fit was no-go, like they hadn't even tried, even after baking it in the sun for hours. Ordered a replacement direct from ACC, it was night and day difference. It sounds like you ordered direct from ACC, but you might have received a one-off dud.

Good idea. I'll ask him. I just poked around on Ebay and there are a couple of manufacturers out there. Next year when I pull the cab and strip it for paint and repairs, I might try one of the others and install it first before the heater core and all that other stuff goes in.
