mclaughlin64's 79 Long Bed Build Up Thread

hi i am new to this forum, my name is killian. i live in ocean shores WA. i have had a couple toyota's so far but i havent loved any of them more than my 79 reg cab long box that i just got about a month ago. i traded a 88 toyota celica gt for this truck straight across and i have big goals for her. i plan on putting a TG 5" inch lift that actually just arrived the other day. i was very impressed with how fast they ship their items. i want to put on 35 12.5 bf goodrich km2 tires on, dual transfer cases, 5.29 gears, detroit lockers front and rear, addicted offroad wench bumper, TG rock sliders. it has the four speed in it (i believe its a L42), i want to swap in a W56 or W52 tranny instead. this is the first lift i will be putting in so i will definitly have some questions for you guys since from what i have read so far all of you seem very knowledgeable. i will keep you posted on the build and i will have lots of pics. and i hope to hear feedback from you guys!! thnx.

no its not bad. the bed has the most rust. but from my understanding they are known for rusting. i have one small rust hole on the drivers side floor, a small rust hole under the drivers side window seal (winshield leaks a little, seal is shot anyway), and under the battery the sheet metal is rusted out. but i have a bunch of sheet metal left over from my baja bug project that ill use to fix er up. in my opinion though it was definitly a fair trade. ha

Welcome to YT...always nice to have another 1st gen in the ranks

as far as your transmission, if it is a side shifter(more than likely) you have an L43.
If it is a top shift 4 speed, it is an L45.

Fix that leaking windshield asap..the water can drip right down the dash to the fuse box...not good, I have personal experience with that one

ya its already doing that. i was looking at doing the window seals myself, would i have to use the same type (the seal with the metal strip in it) or can i use a regular all rubber one?

and my tranny is a side shift, i want to swap for a 5 speed bad.

if you went with the 5 incher for 35s, that thing is gonna be wayy to tall. you could stuff 39s under that. but, either way, nice truck! i like where its going

i might end up going with bigger tires later but for now with the way its gonna be set up (until i get gears) 35 will work better.

well i havent gotten a chance to start on my lift yet. i am waiting for my chevy to come out of the fab shop (getting bumpers made due to it being WAY to tall and getting to many tickets, its a duramax with 13 inches of lift skying over 38), and the yota is the only rig i got right now but im hoping that my chev will be done in a day or two more. and then its time to cut er up!!!!

I love the first gen trucks. I agree it will be pretty tall for 35" tires.

Does that truck happen to still have the smog equipment on it? I would be willing to buy it off you, it'll give you some money towards a weber
