Mal's Build up.

Hey all this is my toyota build up. I have a 82 toyota pick up with a 22r. I have probly have using Yoat Tech forms for years, but I have been doing a lot of reserch lately and would like to get some clearification on some subjects.

First I'm building a 20r/22r hybrid and i ordered a 20r head off of Ebay for $150 and I had a old 22r that had 120000 miles on it and i was told that it had flat top pistons in it. but to my surprise when a tore it apart last week it has dish top pistons. I have looked heigh and low and cant find flat top!! Does anyone where i can get flat top pistons?

I would post this in the regular pre-84 section. Probably get more answers there.

Well folks I know that its been a wile but, I have learnt a lot in the last few months. After a large amount in research I.e many hours in front of a computer with a jumbo pack of Twizzlers looking at what little information there is out there about 20/22r's engines. So I decided to get off my arse and build one for my self and make my own fudge up instead of just reading about it and also work off some of that Twizzler weight.
This is what I came up with after putting in a little over $500 into the block I puled for me old pickup. I started out rebuilding the lower like any other build, new crank, bearings, seals, ect. Then I moved to the upper half. I ordered a head off of ebay for around $150, this was a stock 20r head, I really didn't do much but clean it up and do a little polishing to the ports. I found some interesting things though, for starers everything was stock at this time and when I was putting the head onto the block I had a hard time getting the timing chain on the cam. After a little work I got it on (keep in mind this was my first build) what I found out was that some old heads like the one I had were slightly taller than the 82 stock head, this will do a few things. One it will lower the compression, not really that much, but if your trying to squeeze all the hp out of your little this might be something to keep in mind. And, two it will put stress on your cam and timing chain, because after the engine heats up and expanse it will stretch the time chain even tighter. Then your get he ping of death and a dead engine that just bent all but two valves in your head. Another thing I found on this topic was the valve timing will change after it gets warm which will make it run rough after it get to Operating temperature, even if your use a LC adjustable timing cam gear it sill will change. Something else that is very important I started out with a old block that was slightly warn ( well I was pretty bad to start with), but you have to keep in mind when putting a 20 head it is increasing the compression. What I happened to me was the compression is leaking passed the rings and blowing oil into my pcv valve, and increasing the pressure in the engine, somehow I imagine that is not a good thing, but I haven't had a problem yet with it. (crossing fingers)

I am currently building another hybrid, and I have big plans for it so if anyone is interested or knows more about this please feel free to comment

So how does it run compared to stock? estimated HP? And where did you get your hybrid sticker? I can't wait to start mine up, I haven't touched my block but it is low mileage, I wonder if it will smoke a lot because of the increased compression!

i used gapless second ring and the machine shop that did my 92.5 bore used a toque plate I polished my combustion chambers .009 head surface
Almost 0 blow by great heat dis came out 10.2 on static and 9.9 on cam 92 octane

opposite of smoke if it has a problem due to over compression most likely your breather will soak with May pop valve cover gasket
If you run a PVC then it will smoke
If you run a PVC and it smokes then make sure to check your vac line going to your booster for oil
Oil is caustic and will eat your booster diaphragm

It happened to me on a blower motor

At least hone those cylinders and rering
