1980 power steering and a/c truck!

Long time reader but not a bunch of posting. I had an 80 before but had to sell... anyway I just bought another one. $500! Needless to say its not perfect but is great in my eyes! So I bought this truck off the 2nd owner and I also know the first owner! Pretty nice to be able to ask about the truck I think! So I bought it not running due to not getting any fire. Well it was just a few wires chewed in two... awesome! Well I did the obvious and disconnected the fuel line from the hard line under the hood to put some gas in a little jug. Ran good until it ran out of fuel. So then is when I ran into the problem. Once I hooked the line back up to run to the fuel tank it wonr start or eveb get fuel to the filter... when I crank it and stop to see if there is fuel, I can pull the line off the filter and it sounds like it is sucking air?? I hoping it is just a clogged line! Now to the good parts! When I had it running the a/c worked and the power steering was strong! So now with out anymore rambling I have some pics of my newest addition!

Was able to work on the truck some more today. Redid the main fuel line and that still didn't fix it.. wound up dropping the tank to find out the pickup was blocked.. after about an hour of spraying stuff n cleaning it with a wire brush we hooked it back up and it primed up and ran! Got the tank back in and was gonna drive it to find out that it has no brakes... master cylinder is pretty much dry so hoping I can put some fluid in it and bleed the brakes and she will stop!

Also while I was under it I notices the frame has a big hole on the drivers side.. Any body have luck fixing/plating the frame? I didn't get any pics but the inside of the frame from the back cab mount or so back to the hump in the frame is rotted clear through.. the outside and top is solid though . Any suggestions on what type / thickness of steel to use and the best way to repair it?

If the lines are the same as the ones in my 1984, then you have three lines coming into the engine bay. The lowest one is the fuel pickup and should go to the inlet of the pump (left hardline that bends down). There are two other lines that run parallel to the top of the fender. cap the one that sticks up, and run the horizontal one to the fuel return (the right hardline under the intake manifold).

That's how I have mine hooked up at least. I had to prime the system with an electric pump before it would run.

Well I finally got the beast home. Been gone for 2 weeks for my annual training with the national guard. Anyway. I had gotten it running before I left and it sounded really good. So I went and got all of the legal aspects done today so I could 'drive' it home. Didn't even make it out of the driveway before it shut off.. figured out that my gas tank is way to dirty to even attempt to keep... have another tank lined up and goin to try to get it Friday. Now here's my question, which way is easiest in removing the tank? Bed on and wprk underneath or bed off and work from top? I'll try to get some more pics tomorrow when I get home.

Work from underneath, no need to remove the bed at all. Take the skid guard off to get access to the drain plug, drain it, disconnect the sending unit and fuel hoses, unbolt the tank and drop it on out. Should only take a half hour or so.

I'm going to be removing the bed this weekend to work on some frame repair... hoping to be running Monday to school n back. That way I can work any bugs out I need to. Any advice on bed removal for the old rusty bolts?

My advice would be to use lose nut, proper tools (not a wrench), and if the socket doesn't go in tight, use one size smaller imperial or metric and pound it in with a hammer. Don't forget to unplug the harness too!.

What is the thinest metal you all would use for "patches" of the frame? I have heard 1/8 inch is suitable but not really sure what I need to find ..

I used 1/8" x 8 steel flat bar to patch mine. It's the same thickness as the steel used in the frame.

You're gonna have to get creative, I've heard of people use a fuel tank from an econoline or a f-150, you can do a search on here or on google for more info. Else you could always use a fuel cell or use the for sale/wtb section.

Is yours salvageable?
I shipped mine to http://www.gas-tank.com/
Did an EXCELLENT job.
Even though mine was intact, they restore them as well. They just sandblasted and cleaned mine up really well, and coated it.
Cost was about the same as buying one.
BUT>>>I couldn't find one either buddy.
