1980 4x4 Ironman Tribute Rusto-Mod

Title pretty much sets the stage...play along...

Spotted this gem rotting away in a field a couple years ago...so last January, year and a half later, sent an inquiry via USPS to see if it was possibly for sale. “Ask & ye shall receive!” Price was suggested @ $1500, but said $1200 would be good, so l offered $900 & was handed the title.

I’ve got an idea...always liked Ivan the “Ironman”! (You millennials can Google him. )

Let’s see how these clean up...

Not too bad...steel wool & some CLR worked well, but not going to spend the time on each letter!

Looking much better! It never ceases to amaze me how much junk some folks allow to accumulate in their vehicles.
A lot of it food garbage no less. We yanks do love to eat in our cars.

What’s under the hood? A well-oiled 22R...PO said oil had been leaking from a missing bolt for quite a while before it was noticed, but didn’t tell me which bolt it was...more on that later.

Where to begin? Yotatech Forum of course! What’s all this talk about de-smogging? Get rid of unnecessary clutter? I’m IN!
Thanks to everyone for their info on the De-Smog threads!

There’s something in this pic that gave me real hope when I started tearing everything out...this truck would start right up, idle fine, but wouldn’t go over 30mph & couldn’t turn enough RPMs to get out of 3rd gear...very underpowered! (Look closely at the fuel filter & fuel lines )

I’m thinking this carb is done!?

Oil everywhere, but looks like it’ll clean up well...

This photo shows where the bolt went missing that allowed the motor to oil down everything...(distributor set bolt)...was plugged with whatever OP had lying around (3/4” w/out washers), instead of the 30mm it should have had...don’t ask how I found out.

A little buildup inside the EGR tube...

Hey look! Mr. Acorn Head is hiding out on the intake.

Guess I know where all the exhaust leak smell & noise was coming from...

Like everyone said....if there’s a vacuum hose attached to it, yank it out!

Just keep cutting!

...and cutting!

Giving the valve cover a bubble bath...

Hmmm...not too impressed.

This is better...

A little flat filing...

Carpet has probably already decomposed in the landfill...although removing it revealed some large holes in the floorboards.

Time to start degreasing the engine bay a little while waiting for parts...

Parts? Did I say parts? I’m expecting a Christmas card from LCE!

Thanks, but you’re getting a little too far ahead in the story...you don’t want to ruin it for the slow readers.

Since you brought it up, things took a change several months ago while looking at tires on CL for another vehicle. Found a nice set of take-offs for the Yukon, but decided they would stick out further than desired after the 6 lug to 8 lug conversion. SO...maybe, just maybe I could make these work on this truck? Why would I do this? IDK, but a set of Michelin’s with 200 miles on them, mounted on these wheels for $500 was just too good to waste.

(265/70R18 = 32.5x10.5)

Here’s a little sample pic...more on these later...

Yes, it’s a patch & it might melt, but hasn’t yet (it’s only attached with painter’s tape & still there after a few shake-down test drives). Might tack it on with some adhesive later?

Thanks for looking!

I think you can still buy the original 22R sticker from the dealer. There was a thread on here someplace that said that. Can't remember who's thread it was though. Call the dealer and ask them. I bet you could find them on ebay too. Yup, just looked, ebay has them. Type in toyota 22r sticker.

Let me start by saying, “l like your truck!” (Especially the color, as if there IS any other color?).

Sorry for the Polaroid repro, but ‘White’ is where it’s at...just sayin’ (circa 1990)

Here’s a couple better pics of the same trucks. Been outta the game for awhile, glad to be back.

1980 - pic taken in ‘90

1982 - pic taken in ‘88

As as far as the engine sticker goes...don’t lose focus here, refer back to the thread title. Those stickers remind me of these decals you see on cars from the fly by night used car dealers. Besides, why are so many stickers missing from the 20R/22R engines?

This truck is about to take a turn for the...’different’. The “Rusto-Mod” has multiple meanings, which will become more evident in the next few posts. Not looking at a restoration here...too much work & not enough patience anymore.
