Junkyard finds in Central MD...

Just got back from a morning at the yards... nabbed a 1st gen rollbar and some other assorted stuff. But the hard info:

Crazy Rays, Jessup: You pick, you pull. A couple guys around will pull some stuff for cash, but otherwise, bring a full set of tools. If you need a socket, they have a giant bin of them at the office. Apparently the only one I didn't have was the 12mm I needed. $1 for the socket, btw. $1 to get in, must be 18.

1 1st gen 4runner gray/gray- top is in rough shape but has all the windows. Various mechanical pieces (AC compressor, alternator) in back. Roll bar gone

Top has a chunk taken out of the back but it isn't that deep, could be fixed. Has rust on metal base of driver's side sliding windows. Top is no longer attached to the vehicle since I couldn't get the roll bar out otherwise.

1 2nd gen 4runner, green/gray leather - pretty well picked over. Some interior piece are there, but this thing was totaled at some point... badly.

Didn't see any pickups/taco's but then again, thats a testament to how tough our rigs are.

Calton's, RT. 1, Elkridge/Jessup - Smaller yard, and not a you pick/you pull place, but they keep inventory on what vehicles they have. Go to the office and they'll tell you what they have and take you to the car. Much nicer yard, very organized. Cars laid out 2 deep with wide rows.

I saw a blue late 80's 4x4 truck with heavy rust that just came in and hadn't been picked yet, a 1st gen 4runner in great shape (no motor) with the roll bar, top, everything. Gray/Gray, as well. 2nd Gen 4runner, red. Front end nearly completely gone on the 2nd gen. I'm sure they had more but I found the dimmer switch I needed on the 2nd gen right away.

Good luck and happy hunting!!

Thanks for the good info. The yards around Frederick and W'Monster don't have anything I'm interested in. My wife's cousin works at a body shop in Eldersburg, and he told me at Thanksgiving that he had just sent (like 3 weeks earlier) a good condition, complete, white 1st gen 4Runner to the local yard that had been abandoned at his shop. i was on the phone the next day, but it had been auctioned off at one of the PA auctions already...

What did you have to give for the roll bar?

$50, Phil. I think it was pretty fair. I'm gonna cut it down to size next week or so. I figure since there were pre-trimmed bars being sold to fit 3rd gen.'s for $250, a can of rattle can paint and some padding, and an hour or 3 spent getting it to fit in is worth it.

Toy4x4runner-

There's a Crazy Ray's location up in Mt. Airy, but I didn't feel like driving a half hour up. Originally I just needed the dimmer switch for a 2nd gen, but finding the roll bar was an added bonus. Hit or miss at Crazy Rays though- once we looked for 2 weeks until we found the motor we needed for a Grassroots $2000 challenge car a friend ran. But when we found it we jumped on it! They don't keep inventory on the cars there, so you never know. But Caltons is prolly worth the call if you need something. Shame about that 1st gen...

Holy old threads, Batman!! But a couple things to note for my fellow Central MD junkyard jockeys...

I went to the Crazy Ray's in Mt. Airy a couple weeks ago and scored some Aisin hubs in perfect shape (only a couple small scratches) off of a picked over P/U for $20.

But for those of you with 2nd Gens, they had a pair of 4Runners about 20 feet apart immediately to the left of the entrance, down the hill from the office. The one had a 3VZ still in it, with the intake manifold removed. I'll be heading back there next week for more spare stuff if I have time.

Its really easy to get to, about a 10 minute drive from i-70. Right near the Tractor Supply. And for that matter, tons of other stuff, and not picked over like the one in Jessup. The same green totaled 2nd Gen was still in Jessup, as was another 1st gen with the rollbar still in it.

They also had an FJ40 back in the corner near the dumptruck (you know where it is if you've been there) that had the body still there with some mechanicals. Nothing really there for me to snag, but someone may need something.

I've decided I need to get an electric impact gun.

the one in Jessup still had the rollbaras of 3 weeks ago. Chances are you could still snag it.

BTW, I put this thread up almost a year ago.

They get a 1st gen in there from time to time. Just have to stay on top of it. Because they don't inventory, its tough to say what'll be there.

Calton's is right up the street, and though it isn't pick/pull, they can tell you exactly what they have. They did have a 1st gen in the lot, but i didn't look at it (3 weeks ago)

Mt. Airy Ray's didn't have any 1st gens, but that could change at any time. Granted it isn't picked over as much as the others most stuff lasts up there longer.

Hey, OlHarleyMan, if I come across a rollbar, I'll snag you one if you want. Hopefully if my truck is back from the shop this week, I'll be at the yards Thursday. Mine set me back $50, so figure around that price. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.
