what tires?

I was wondering what tires i should get for my 89 4x4 extended cab. I will be lifting it 4 inches and running a 33. I want a tire that looks good and rides nice on the road.

No point in having a mud tire if you just drive on road. Go with A/Ts at the most. BFG Rugged Trails will be plenty good on road and you can probably find them as take-offs at a tire shop.

I have the BGF AT, like tons of other people, and really like them. If you want it to drive nicely on the roads, go with an all terrain instead of a mud terrain.

Treadwright retreads........

Inexpensive, impressive, warranty, etc, etc.

I have the 31/10.50/15 OTR's (I know this isn't the size you're looking for) and they are pretty darn quiet for such an agressive pattern. The stock radio and speakers covers the sound easily at 60mph with all the windows open. They have that same tire in a 33/12.50/15 and if I recal they are 85$ each. Find a name brand tire for that price...... I dare ya!

i have the firestone destination MT and i love them they are really quiet on the road and still are even after putting around 15,000 miles on them and they still look like they have plenty of tread on them
oh and of course they do really good in the mud as long as you arn't bottomed out they will get you through

How do those Destination M/Ts do on ice, rumour has it they are better than most M/Ts.

Hey thanks for the heads up on the Treadwright retreads, those do look pretty sick for the money.

If you just want looks and no offroad ability go with Interco Thornbirds or something.

All mud terrains are going to be loud. It's the nature of the tread design that makes them effective in mud. Some are louder than others, but they will all hum or whine or scream on pavement.

I have put at least 15,000 miles on, and have had good experiences with:
BFG Mud Terrain
BFG All Terrain
Dunlop Mud Rover (weak sidewalls, though - not a problem on the street)
Maxxis Buckshot Mudder (hard tread compound, but they did okay in the mud. Loud on the street)
Interco TSL (really, really loud on the road)
Interco TSL Bogger

And while I've only put about 5k on them, I'm loving my Treadwrights.

I've also heard good things about those trXus M/Ts, though I haven't tried them. Priced some out a few months ago, and they were pretty inexpensive, though. I ended up going with the Treadwrights.

4 inch lift seems excessive for 33s....are you building a mud bogger?

I wouldnt go over 2 inches to clear 33s...keep it low

I didn't want to say this, as I thought the lift was already on, but I misread.

Since you haven't lifted it yet: reconsider your lift height. You don't need a 4" lift to accommodate 33s.

Keep in mind how narrow the track is. Don't excessively lift it unless you are going to widen its stance.

I find it hard to believe that Thornbirds were made by the same company that makes Swampers Thornbirds seem to have the worse reputation.

I agree with you on the AT's but disagree about the BFG Rugged trails. My Taco came with them stock. They were the worse tire on wet roads and even worse on snowy/ice roads.

To the OP: don't forget that you will probably want to regear to 4.88's with 33's. Your truck would probably pull a set of 32's a little easier with out as big of hit on the MPG.

They are terrible. I bought a truck with a set of them a few years back, and they were absolutely worthless offroad. They rode really well on the street, but they may as well have been highway tires offroad.
