Procomp Xtreme M/T vs. Dick Cepek Mud Country

I'll be looking for new tires in the very near future. I do about 80% road driving, so am looking for the toughest looking tires that will do well on the road too. The two I'm considering most are Procomp's new Xtreme M/T and Dick Cepek's new Mud Country tires. I'm looking for a factory siped M/T style tire that will give good traction in the ice and snow. They'll be in 265/75 16 size and both are only available in 10 ply, E load range. Anyone have firsthand experience on either of these or other suggestions on similar tires? Will the 10 ply tire be harsh on the road? Pics...

The Procomp Xtreme M/T

The E load tires will be a lot harsher on road than p-rated tires. I when from p-rated to C load and it's a lot stiffer.

Just for comparison, you should probably look at Wrangler MTR's and Cooper Discoverer STT's also, they are in the same price and perfomance range. This is pretty much the same decision I will have to make, and I'm leaning towards MTR's right now due to their advantage in rock traction.

I would also try and get a D rated tire, because a 10-ply E-rated tire just doesn't flex very much off road.

yep, currently in same decision also, I'm leaning towards Cooper STT, with Cooper ST as second, and Pro-Comp Muds (mud radial maybe? different tread) that look almost exact same as STT's

I would avoid the Pro-Comp Radial muds like the plague, they're incredibly loud on-road and their comound chips easily. My TrXuS M/T's are a LOT quieter than my friend's Pro-Comp Muds...

Which makes me want to mention, TrXuS M/T's in a 265x75R16 are only $142 a tire, way cheaper than the others mentioned so far. They are admittedly difficult to balance and a little on the heavy side though. Also might not wear as long, I wouldn't expect to get much more than 30,000 miles out of them. Thay do have EXCELLENT snow and ice traction, along with mud and rocks.

pro-comp, cooper, mastercraft, DC, they are all made by cooper, and are very similar. i have the st-c and like them pretty good. from what i've heard, the STT wears really fast, i had a set but never mounted them. as far as looks they are hot.

people seem to really like the trxus m/t

just food for thought....I have Kumho Road Venture A/T's on my truck right now in a 265/75/16 variety, I love them, and also you should look at -
http://kumhousa.com/tiresubcategory.do?parentId=2&id=22
Two different Kumho Mud Terrains - one is a tread take off of the BFG MT, the other is a brand new tread design for Kumho.

The MT 834's (BFG TREAD) are priced here:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....Venture+MT+834
Looks like $126 a tire for 265/75/16's.
33X11.50's are only $140 a tire...
I'd check em out.

For those who are curious the all new MT KL71 is priced here:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....enture+MT+KL71
Looks like also 126 a tire for 265/75/16's and $123 for 33X10.5 and $135 for 33X11.5, only $148 for 33X12.5

I just talked with a tire shop and they told me to avoid 10 ply tires for two reasons: ride and lack of off road flex. So, that basically means that I'm back to square one lol. The Xtreme M/T's, Dick Cepek and Toyo M/T's are all 10 ply tires! The Kumho MT KL71's look sweet! I'm also considering Nitto Terra Grapplers as well. Thanks for your input so far!

EDIT: I looked at the Kumho's on Tirerack and they don't list exact specs. They don't even list the 265/75 size on Kumho's site, so I'm a little confused!

i have 10 ply tires, as do alot of people, and when aired down they are like any other tire, but they are a bit stiffer than p-rate on the road.

I had some of the older model Kumho mudders on my Tacoma and I thought they were great overall. They didn't dig in mud or climb out of ruts quite as well as some slightly more aggresice mt's I've had, but they did seem to do a little better on rocks. They did however stay quiter and last longer than any other mt I've run. I had a little over 45k on them when me and a tree had a slight disagreement...I'd say they had another 10k of life in them before they needed to be replaced, 15ish if you like em bald before new ones.

I just put some of the Cooper ST's on my runner about 5k ago and so far think they are a great tire. Night and day compared to the Duelers they replaced... We've had a handful of snows since install so I've gotten a chance to try them out in the snow and the gooey mud that comes after the thaw and they have performed better than any other AT I've had on a rig including bfg's... Not too mention they are pretty naughty lookin for an AT IMO

Said it for me, thanks.

I had Pro Craps on my Jeep. The outter lugs chipped a bit which bugged me. However, the price was right since I bought them used from my cousin.

The Coopers are nice, MTRs cost too much.

My moms FJ Cruiser wears a set of Mud Countries and I must say I really like them, although I haven't thrown them through the gauntlet yet.

I had e load Nitto mud grapplers and they were super harsh... If you are doing 80% on road driving, I would recommend avoiding the e load.

I'm going to throw in another vote for Super Swamper TrXus M/T's. they are probably about the best bang for the buck tire that you can get in any size.

pro comp

The best snow/ice tire that I have used is the Pro Comp A/T. It rides well, balances well, and has a 50,000 mile warranty. This being said, I am still headed back to BFG A/T's for the next set.

I use studded winters for winters, and I am set up to buy the dick cepek fc2's at the end of the month for summers. I went for the 285's over 265's just to get into a D rating instead of the E rating. Since I also wanted an aggressive tire for 80% highway, the fc2 looked like the perfect combination between a mt and at.
