this will forever be a most debated topic
Chevy v. Ford
American v. Imports
Wide v. Skinny tires
Republican v. Democrat
Army v. Navy
there is no real answer. it's a preference.

here in az narrow tires are the way to go. that is what we run on our hunting rigs. i hate wide tires no traction for crap. we are in the woods about 250 days a year hunting everything from elk, deer, turkey, bear, lion, coon, javelina, ANYTHING that is in season we go after it.
with this uncle sam check we are getting a set of 34/10.5/16 ltb super swampers. i run 235/85/16. i have traction in up to 3 feet of snow. they dont distribute the weight so that i can get traction in mud or on decomposed granite, and not just slide all over.

tire width depends on how deep the mud is, you don't want a 38.5x11 tire...if you're running through 6ft deep mud...you'll likely just dig down to the bottom and be stuck quick..
if the mud is DEEP then get a WIDE tire, if you're running through mud that is not more than a foot deep or so, then get some 34x10.50 LTB's or some 31x12.5 boggers, or some 33x13.50 LTBS (they're shorter than regular 33's lol)
with that being said i have ALWAYS loved big wide tires, and i plan on running just 12.50's on my 4runner, although if i could, i'd run 14's
now my street tires will be a skinny 33 or 34 gas mileage buddyyy LOL
(if you even have gas mileage with a heavy arse 4runner with the 3.slo and 4.56s lol)
