Hey, I'm home sick from school, So I got tired of layin' around and started looking at tires for my '86 Yota, I need a darn good mud tire, something that cleans, is good in gumbo, and has decent tread life as it will be on a daily driver.. and I don't want it to cost me an arm and a leg, cause this truck is stickshift .. Yeah anyways its between these tires so far, anyone got any opinions?

I'm also debating on getting 31x10.5x15's, or 33x10.5x15's, Some of those tires don't come in 10.5's so I might have to bump up to a 11.5, or 12.5 I will be running a Toytec 2" lift before these tires are installed. And I need some help, I usually run BFG's on EVERYTHING I own, actually all three vehicles I have have them now..

 

swampers all the way! interco makes the best tires for mud imo!

 

Tons of info on that on here and other sites and you're probably gunna want to regear if you go with a 33 in any of those tires, lots of people run 33x10.50's without regearing but if you're truck came stock with 28's and not 31's then you're definately gunna wanna regear for 33's!

I WILL eventually regear, if I feel the need to, which I most likely will... I have 4.10 gears and will go to 4.88's if I get 33's, I kinda think the 31's might look goofy with a 2" lift...Any opinions on that? I can't find any pics of that.. I'm seriously considering the Swamper TSL, or the BFG M/T.. Its pretty much between those two.. I know my brother always ran BFG M/T's on his trucks, but he didn't do alot of muddin', he did more of trails, and rock crawling, I do more muddin', and trails..

 

The BFG muds are good. But if you are doing SERIOUS mudding, then go with a super swamper, but I would go with the BFG.

 

Try siping your tires to maximize wet/ icy road traction. My tires are siped from the factory, but they are alot better than the mud tires I had on my truck before. Other factors came into play for sure, but read up on siping.

 

The TSL will be less friendly on the road especially on a DD. It all depends on where you want to compromise.

 

im considering getting Definity Dakota M/T from Pepboys. they are made by cooper here in America. and are very inexpensive. looks like they have a very aggressive tread and ive heard good things about them on here and other websites so far

 

About the most serious muddin' I'm gonna do is unmaintained roads, unfinished golf courses, and the local mud runs... so its between the TSL Radial and the BFG M/T...

 

Spence1016 Thats what i'm running right now, I needed new tires badly and that was a quick cheap option. They are actually really decent tires so far and are really good looking as well.

 

Sounds like you've opted out on the Dunlop Mud Rovers, but I love mine! I've been running them for about 6 months now. I'm running 33x12.50's. Their loud, but all Muds are. lol And they have good street manors, seem to wear pretty good and they look great!

Honestly, I'd never heard of them untill I found em on Craigslist used. Can't beat the deal and I've never heard anything bad about them.

I've always heard TSL's wear the fastest, but they do what they were designed for very well. Their just not as good on the street.
The BFG's are good too. But I don't think they are quite as agressive in the mud.

awesome, how do they handle trails/mud? i don't plan on doing anything too extreme in 2wd but it would be nice to be able to go through some stuff

 

i've been through some deep watery mud and they performed very well. I need to find some thick gumbo mud and test them. I have yet to do any runs on any trails, as most of the trails in colorado are closed for the winter, i've also been through some pretty deep snow and they perform very well. Obviously snow makes no difference to you. I'll be hitting some trails very soon, most of them open in April. I'll keep you posted.

 

Swampers are an AWESOME mud tire but they're very expensive and they don't have a long life at all. I personally have BFG's on both of my trucks, and i love them, a set of AT's on my chevota and a set of MT's on the runner. They clean well, last decently long and they wont cost you an arm and a leg either. Ive had Dunlop's all terrain rover tires before, and while i know little about their mud terrains, they seem like a decent tire to me.

i run dayton timberline m/t's on all sorts of surfaces. they are noisy on road, work well aired down on rocks, get me through a variety of mud trails, absolutely terrible on light snow or ice but will get you through deep snow.

oh, and they wear very well. my .02.

i'd go BFG if it's a daily driver i'm about to buy some TSLs tomorrow though. as long as your wheels have somewhat descent backspacing 33X10.50X15s will fit no problem.

 

31''10.50'' swamper TSL's are the cheapest M/T tire i've found...i've had mine a little over a year..and they have way more than 3/4 tread left...its amazing...
it was usually drove small amounts during the week...went muddin on weekends..so..thats why they are lasting so long...buy some swampers...then by a CHEAP set of all terrains..or street tires..then just switch out when you need to..thats what im gonna do on my '80...

 

 

I'd go with the BFG over the swamper in your case. I'm assuming you're away at college, and if that's the case, you'll probably be driving quite a bit and the Swampers will wear too quick...and I think they're a good bit more expensive.
