how big of a tire for a 4cyl 2wd taco

I have a 2004 tacoma 2wd xcab 4cyl. that calls for 205x75x15 tires. I need to put something bigger on it. Someone on here says that 215's are the biggest that my motor will handle but I'm confused. How big of a tire can I put on this thing without killing gas mileage and that the engine will handle. Sams Club will not even sell anything but the 205s and I want something biggerl. Can anyone lead me in the right direction. I don't want to do any mods to the truck.
