Gearing...5.29's or 4.88's? HELP.
#1
Alright...
1994 Toyota 4wd pickup, Brand new 22re with around 12,000 miles on it, No mods done at all to the engine.
Right now im running stock gearing with 33 12.50 Cooper Discoverer STT Mud Terrains.
Im getting an average of 14-20 to the gallon IF i keep my foot out of it. This is my daily driver.
I mostly drive highway with the once a week off roading. A little mud here and there, but no rock climbing.
Im looking for more power of the line, better acceleration, Something thats gonna bark the tires off the line if i want it to (which my 4 banger does now) and i might run some bigger tires soon...Probably wont go any bigger than 35's to 36's.
At this point in time i plan on running 33's till i save up some money, but i would love to gear it up now while i have the money in my pocket,
What would be the best gearing choice for not only 33's...but 35's if i decide to go bigger?
(Which i probably will sooner or later)
What gearing choice would be best, 5.29 or 4.88?
Are 5.29's or 4.88's gonna kill my gas mileage with 33's, and what gas mileage do you think i will get?
What gas mileage are you getting with yours?
Im not afraid to admit i dont know a whole lot about gearing and such. So let me know what you think...

Hands down.
I have 33's on my tacoma and I'm running 5.29s. (Build thread in sig)
I get 16-17 City and 21 on the highway.
Your RPM's are going to be a tad high but you'll need the power to turn the large heavy tires in 5th gear. Especially with an engine that puts out what, 90 to the wheels...
Besides, no way your going to want 4.88's with 35's
You don't want to have to pay for the regearing twice, do you?

Oh dang, i didn't even see your mpg's till after i posted that.
Well i reckon that sounds reasonable seeing as that im getting about 16-20 now.
SCUBA---Do you have good power? Good acceleration? And how fast can you run with the 33's?

if you are planning on doing an SAS, wait to regear.because of the smaller diff in the front, youd have to regear twice. if not, then i wouldnt keep 5.29s with 33s for too long. if you have newer 33s, just wait to get 35s. IMO 5.29s are too much gearing for 33s. some guys i know say 5.29s are even a little too much for 35s. just my .02$

If I wind it up it does pretty great for what it is.
I'm sure if I took off the 300+ extra pounds I've added in armor and junk it would be a bit quicker off the line.
Good power? Yes. Acceleration? Moderate. Top speed? I think I've been to about 102, but thats as far as I wanted to go. I probably could have hit the speed governor @107~ before hitting the redline but I didn't want to test my luck.

102 is wayyyyyyyyy more than i plan on doing with old Tonkatoy over here haha
But that sounds good, I have the 4" rough country suspension lift, and as it is i can light up the 33's.
But its just that when i shift into 5th i start slowing down, therefore i have to run 75 mph just to maintain 5th, so its a constant 4th 5th battle.
My truck tops out about 85 or so (speed odomiter is off so im not exactly sure)
And id just like to have something with a little more power than that.
So all together 5.29's good idea in your eyes scuba?

When I was on 4.10s I had a tough time maintaining 5th gear as well. So I know what you mean.
I have plans of going to 35's, within the next couple weeks actually. So when I decided on gearing I was planning ahead.
The difference between 4.88's and 5.29's is only about 250 RPM or so.
It won't be a huge difference but I sure wouldn't want 4.88's and 35's.
The geography out here is full of hills. Personally, I'd run 5.71's and 35's if I could. But they don't make them for my junk.
It's all up to you. I don't think you'll be let down with 5.29's.
You can play around with this gear calculator and see what RPM's you'll be at with what size tire and what gearing.
Good luck.

You've got a manual transmission right?
Im planning on putting 5.29's in and running 33's until i save up the money for 35's.
Im trying to decide between...
35-14.50 mud grapplers
35-14.50 Super swamper boggers
34-9.50 Super swamper narrows
