Gas milage improvement on BFG 31x10.50
I have a '90 Toyota ex cab 4x4 truck, 22re DLX. It has 31x10.5 BFG All Terrains. I just had the 22re rebuilt, and did the clutch and exhaust. I will be keeping this truck for a long time.
My lifestyle has changed to where I am not in the woods as much as I used to, and I spend more time on the highway. I do not want to totally neuter the truck, but would like better gas mileage.
I am thinking of selling the 31's and buying 235 BFG All Terrains. Has anybody noticed an improvement in gas mileage when doing so? If so, how much?
The truck now gets 20-21 mpg on the money, highway and flat.
Would this be a worthwhile swap, or just get another set of 31's when the time comes?

Fuel economy might be the same. A smaller tire means that your engine will need to spin at higher RPMs to travel the same speed. Higher RPMs means greater fuel consumption. However, the smaller tires will have less weight. Therefore, less mass to rotate = less strain on the engine. I would guess that you might lose a bit of gas mileage, especially on the highway, but not a lot.
