Another painted wheels thread

Stock 3rd gen triple bi spokes in the 16" size.

Been working on them for a couple of months off and on in between frustration with the MR2 timing belt and water pump.

They were pitted up something terrible from the mag chloride used in winter around here. My son has painting experience so he leads the way around here on such projects.

Wire brushed and wet sandpaper to get the pitted clear coat off. Finally got them good enough to primer and paint. Clear coat yet to come.

The primer is a gray (grey for you Canadians...) Rustoleum brand "Automobile Primer" fast drying and wet sandable. Did 2 coats of primer. Wet sanded after each one. 2 cans covered everything. Even primered the back side of the rim face for extra protection where it meets the rotors.

Wally Mart has the 16oz. cans for same price as the 12oz. That's a no brainer.

Black paint is also Rustoleum- "Specialty High Heat Ultra" in a Semi-Gloss sheen. Also came in a large size can 15 oz same price as 12. 2 cans covered everything-again did the back side of the face and the rim lips for full coverage and protection.

Picture on the black paint can is a BBQ grill-'resists heat up to 1200 degrees'. Seemed like a great idea for if the brakes ever get toasty. 3 coats of black.

Probably do some clear coating tomorrow.

Like all painting the prep work makes all the difference. We used wire brushes- even a battery post brush and plumber's pipe prep brushes to get in the lug holes and clean 'em out properly.

I like the way they are turning out. There are some flaws but I have to really look for them to see them through the paint. Removing the pre-existing clear coat was one of the more difficult things to do all the way to bare metal.

3 layers of clear coat? What do you think?

some better shots

thanks for the feedback. Here are some better daytime shots and the paint cans used.

Still no clear coat applied- I read the directions thoroughly and it says to give 48 hours after the paint so one more day on that.

ok these are now clear coated and the clear coat seemed to really attract the dust in the air, but they wiped up clean. Just not as glossy shiny as I had hoped for but they still look good.

Put on the free Ivans for now with BFG AT TA KOs one is balding pretty bad but should get me by for the summer at least.
