40s on an 88 4runner possible?? Even if they are free?
I was just about to buy some 35s for my 88 4runner and I was grumbling about the price for 5 of them, over a beer with a guy that works for me and he said "hey I have some tires you can have if you want." I ask him about the tires and he says that he and his son built a jeep with some 40" Swampers on it a couple of years ago. They rolled the jeep shortly after but he has the wheels/tires. He says I can have them. I go over to look at them and it turns out that they are 39.5x13.5xr16 Irok Radials and they are almost new. Well, at least 3 of them look pretty good. I'd guess 75% tread left. These things are huge!! Is it even possible to use them on an 88 4runner without major sheetmetal trimming in the front and back? I was planning on trimming up the front fenders with the 35s, but the back should fit. With these 40s I am not even sure that they would fit in the rear wheel wells. Has anyone ever done this? Right now I only have a 2" body and 3" suspension, so I would assume that would have to change along with regearing.
The other option is to just sell them and put that money towards some new 35" MT Radial MTZs or DC Crushers

Get 'em. Hold on to 'em. Spend that tire money on SAS parts, and you can go with as much lift as necessary, or as much as your little heart desires with no sheet metal trimming

My initial thought was to buy a long travel kit for it since I am saving the cost of the tires, I didn't even think about SAS switch. Huh.....
If I go with SAS, I'd have to lift that thing about 7 or 8" wouldn't I? Enough to get the truck up off of the tires, right?

Use some Toyota springs up front, some 63" chevy's in the back, and you should clear those just fine.
7-8" of lift with a SAS swap would be easy. Really, it's up to your imagination. You could find springs to keep it near stock height, or lift it 15+ inches. It's all up to whatever you want to do, and what kind of springs you find.

IFS parts will not like 39" tires...
but think of the costs here:
sas kit 1100
Longfields 600 (stock birfs arnt going to last long with 39s)
rear lift 600
and you still need to regear both diffs to 5.29s.. and if your going to regear might as well lock them as well.
your at 2300 bucks, NOT counting regearing, or the front axle.
but think of the costs here:

You could save yourself about $1200 by doing rears up front and chevies in the rear. and you could probably get it swapped, geared and locked with longfields for around $2300-$2500 depending on how you do your shopping
And to the OP you mentioned selling them and buying new tires...dude, that would be such a dick move...

Exactly what he said. That would be really messed up.
You can get a pair of rockwell axles for a grand. I don't care what you do, you aren't gonna break 'em. Plus 'create' your own SAS stuff, $500 bucks. Who said you had to use a kit? With some creativity, you can go bigger, stronger, for less money. And then down the road, if you wanted to throw a small block chevy in the truck, you would never have to worry about more power than the drivetrain can handle

a stock toyota axle will not like 40's either...
could get a pair of Dana60's for less than a grand..and not have to mod as much to make em work

SAS with RUF and 63s. before even considering runnin those tires, get gears. 35s is ok on 4.10s, i do it everyday. but 40s? you would be 1 and 2 gear. maybe 3rd down hill lol. you fit 52in Michelins on it with enough lift and trimmin. and yes its been done. go to nc4x4 and type in toyota on 52s

There is a little more history behind the "gift." The guy is a subcontractor of mine. The dinner, I talked about above, was me giving him a bonus for doing a good job. $25k to be exact. He is a good friend of mine and he is actually the one that suggested selling them if I can't get them to fit. He is the type of guy that would be insulted if I gave him the "gift" back. I'm sure you know the type. I ended up trading them for a set of 35s with wheels. It worked out good.

Here's what my 84 4Runner with 4-5" of lift, a ton of trimming and 39.5" Iroks looks like
Front axle is fully built with Longfield 30 splines, Longfield hub gears, ARP knuckle & hubs studs. It gets expensive fast

I fully disagree. I've been running 40's for 3 years now. Never had any issues regarding the 8" diff. Hell, I rock 4cyl diffs and Aussie lockers in mine and never had any issues. You do have to learn how to drive very carefully and back off anytime you have wheelhop or get the tires into a undercut rock.

88 4runner on 36s
I have a 88 4runner with 6 inch rough country lift with 36 12.5 16.5 no cutting with a lil squat in the back due to wore out leafs I havn't replaced them yet im working slow to a sas I got the axle just need the other parts
