3rd Gen 4Runner with 17" TRD Pro Rims - Which Size Tires?

Hello,
I just bought a new set of OME TRD Pro rims 17"x7" for my 3rd gen SR5 V6 5-speed. I am replacing corroded FJ 16"x8" rims with worn out 265/75/16 BFGs. I have a 2" lift on the rig.

The wheels are 2007 FJ/2010 4Runner TRD wheels and up. Part #PTR20-35110-GR

I know that I can install 265/70/17 AT tires and they will be roughly the same diameter as my current 16" BFGs. If I want to go a size bigger, these are probably my options:

285/70/17: 32.7" Diam
275/70/17: 32.2" Diam

I don't know exactly how going from a 8" to a 7" wide rim will affect the fit of these 2 sizes, but I'm thinking about choosing the 275s to be on the safe side. The 285s also concern me from a power/MPG side as well.

But I hardly ever see anyone talking about 275s here. Are there any drawbacks to that tire size?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well I have had lots of views but no replies, so I'm trying to research things the best I can.

I had some bad info on the current FJ rims that I have. They are 7" not 8 inch.
OE Part #4261135370
Rim Size: 16 x 7 inch
Offset: 15mm
Backspace: 4.59 inches
Current Tires: 265/75/16

My new TRD Pro rims specs are:
OE Part #PTR20-35110
Offset: 4mm
Backspace: 4.16"
New Tires: ?/?/17
Based on the decrease in backspace with the new TRD rims, my tires will be 0.43" closer to the UCAs, with 265 tires. If I go wider:
275/70/17: tires will be approximately 0.63" closer to the UCAs. I did a rough measurement, and I currently have around 0.75" of clearance between tire and the edge of the UCAs.

So I have in theory around 0.12" of space to spare with 275s. Is this too tight of a fit to the upper control arms?

Thanks

I’ll admit, two views are mine but tires and sizes is a very seasoned situation that I’m not seasoned on hope someone chimes in but the what size tire will fit is always a tricky one

Just pulled up some stuff on the web that the two numbers are added to equal the offset but I’m also a French super model on the net

I think you are referring to my post before I edited it. The specs for the TRD wheels I have say "offset 11mm, 4mm." I posed the question of why are there 2 numbers here, and what do I do with these 2 numbers? But I have come to find out that the offset for the new TRD rims is stated as 4mm. I found that online and I confirmed it by measuring the backspace and calculated a 4mm offset for the 7" wide rim. I have no idea what the 11mm number is about, so I edited that number out of my post.

Also, I drew my current rim config on paper and compared it to what I will have with the new rims. I will actually gain distance from the UCAs with the new rims, so I will be fine with a wider tire on the 7" wide rim. I had it backwards.

So I just purchased a set of Nokian Outpost NAT tires in size 275/70/17 from Discount Tire. After I made the purchase, I saw that 285s are actually cheaper. Maybe that is why it seems 275s are not discussed much, because they are a lot less common and therefore more expensive than the bigger tire?

Can anyone give me advice on whether 285/70/17 tires will fit on my 2" lifted 3rd Gen? If they will work without any further mods, I might change my order to that size, since they are cheaper and more available.

Thanks!

The 285's will likely rub unless you add more lift or use spacers. the 275's will be much more practical. Some run 285s, but usually with 2.5–3" of front lift or aftermarket UCAs that tuck tighter.

Thanks John for your input. Yeah I think the 285s might be just a little too much, so I'm staying with the 275s. Now, if Discount Tire could get these tires in, so I can get them on my rig; that would be nice!

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I will post a pic when I get the new wheels and tire installed.
