We have a discussion going on about using either ice chests or ARB/Engle type of fridges going on at another forum.

Someone brought up this microwave that works with a rig off of 12v.

Have they gone to far, or is this something that you might actually use if you are out camping with your rig and tents.
I am not talking about RV camping, as most RVs these days come with a microwave.

I am talking about if you are with a group of people either off roading for a weekend, or if you are out exploring with your rigs for even up to a week or more at a time.

Is this something that you would consider for ease of cooking a meal one or more nights without firing up the white gas or propane stove?

Just like I thought, it would be really weak through the lighter plug. I could see that being useful....it seems like it might be a little much though.

 

I am thinking the same thing.
4+ minutes to warm up a slice of pizza at 12V.
Plus leftover pizza always tastes better cold

I have a nice oven that I bought years ago around '92 that will fit on top of any type of camping stove.

This is what I use to heat up food. Works good for me. For a microwave burrito, try a frypan with lid, on low heat.



Cheaper, lighter, more compact, and more versatile.

i'm in love... twice over. a portable microwave & then a crapper!! ohhhh.. that's heaven, haha.

 

Bumper Dumper was also used on Top Gear's recent winter special where they were the first people ever to drive to the North Pole. They of course took toyotas. They used a diesel hilux that looked similar to a supercab tacoma, only it had a diesel. It's gotta be the coolest looking toyota I've seen and probably the most expensive, check out clips on youtube. It was a nice to see a little offroading, or extreme arctic exploration, episode on a show that mostly deals in fast track cars and supercars. Funny show highly recommended.

 

Go to Walmat and buy a cheap microwave. Then go to the dealer and buy a Tacoma with the 115 volt outlet. That's what I was planning on doing when the need comes.

 

Sorry, that won't work because the outlet is only rated at 300 watts, I believe. most Microwaves (even the small ones) are around 1000 watts.

 

1000 watt inverters are available.

My buddy has a 1000W inverter in his FJ40 and we hooked it up to a Wok to deep fry some homemade egg rolls.

We caught some crap in camp while setting the thing up, but when fresh deep fried egg rolls started to materialize, the badgering turned to begging.

A small micro might be cool for car camping, or in one of those chaser trailers.

 

I dunno... I think it's a little much. Of course, then again, Duncan, fresh egg rolls would be mighty tempting while out on a climbing/camping trip.

 

The Tacoma outlet is rated 115v/400w. Most microwaves pump around 6-7 hundred watts. Bigger or smaller models; give or take. I was kinda just kidding around... IMO just buy a Coleman, a cheap teflon pan and forget about it. Buy the Tacoma too.
