Affordable roof top tents?

are there any? i've been looking for a while now, and can't bring myself to shell out $1300-$1800 for any of the well know tents. i want to mount one on my 416 trailer, for a maryland-alaska trip possibly next year.

i don't mind spending $800 or so

any ideas.

thanks

www.racktents.com

I am thinking of getting one, and it fits the stock FJ rack too.
They have two models, the one below is the one with an actual floor in it made out of aluminum.

The more expensive tent has fiber for the floor I believe.
All specs are on the site.

$825.00

$995

Hehe, I spent 600$ on a van! And its got a loveseat with a foldout twin bed! Instead of gettin a rooftop tent have you thought of a topper? and an inflateable air mattress? I'd go that route if I didn't have my van, and a nice new toolbox on my truck..

You're going to have a tough time trying to find one really cheap. Even if you do, I would question the structural integrity of the cheaper materials. But I do know what you're saying about the price. I wish they were all about half of the price. Perhaps classified section of someone parting out their rig?

Brought back from the dead. Camping Labs has a nice RTT in various sizes and the $$ isn't bad. I am considering a bedrack-mounted one for next summer.

I'm a fan of the CampingLab RTT's - Here is their medium (94x55) tent

I have it mounted above the bed with this custom rack

Like I said, I love this tent (and so does the wife)... The changing room is a great addition. We can leave the changing room attached to the RTT when we fold it closed and the heavy duty cover for the tent has plenty of room for the changing room walls when closed up...

This will be my next purchase for my 4runner. Its like a tree house for grown ups. Having it would lead to me being gone on month long road trips.

Does anyone know if its possible to set up a campinglab RTT so that there is easy access to the sunroof without having to get all the way out of the tent?

pray4surf - Have you thought up of a secure gear storage for your bed? I'm going to get a bed rack much like yours and was just trying to brainstorm some designs for gear storage in the bed.

Nothing 'secure'... Unless I chain/cable lock it to the truck...

I do plan on carrying 4-20L containers (2 gas, 2 H2O) up against the cab along with a med/lge Action Packer with spare parts/tools/truck fluids...

At the back (next to the tailgate) I carry my ice chest and chuckbox, and fill in the rest of the bed with firewood/folding chairs/PETT/EZ-Up/etc.

But nothing to prevent someone from grabbing what they can...

I'd be interested in your brainstorms

I have toyed with the idea of a drawer sytem between the wheelwells. but it would have to be quite weatherproof....

its not a rooftop or rack tent, but may still be applicable. It's also not $1800, just check it out.

Those look like a direct ripoff of Autohome tents which are made in Italy.

The FAQ at the site you listed
http://autotoptent.com/faqs/
is the same as Autohome's FAQ
