Ok here's a couple of mine...I'll try not to get carried away here..

Most of these were taken on a Canon SD800is and SD870is but I recently upgraded to the Canon Rebel T1i and I'm not sorry I did.

Perhaps, but suggesting to just use Av is WRONG. It's like saying "here's a 24 drawer custom Snap On toolbox" and then opening every drawer and just finding a hammer. May as well have suggested leaving it in Auto.

The mode dial has Auto, Program, Av, Tv, and Manual settings for a reason - each one offers another set of creative options.
Auto - will be the most likely to get you the correct exposure in challenging situations

Program - kind of duplicated by Av, Tv, or manual. Basically, set whichever elements of the exposure you want (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) and it will adjust the others to get a proper exposure

Av - Aperture value. Adjusts the shutter speed to create the right exposure for the aperture selected for the desired depth of field.

Tv - Time value. Adjusts the aperture to create the right exposure for the shutter speed selected for the desired blur/stopmotion.

Manual - you must set the shutter speed, aperture, AND ISO. While this offers the most creative control, it also is the biggest risk of improper exposure.

Note, the mode dial may have other scene modes - these are just shortcuts to settings that are available in either Av or Tv. For example, "fireworks" mode is going to have a long shutter speed and a small(ish) aperture.

All True I just started using Av and i then began to better understand what the other modes where for and i learned from there. Figured it would start him off slow and i didn't feel the need to go into such depth. I would not say my suggestion was for him to only shoot Av but you are right the other modes have their places and functions just as much as Av does and you should use and know all of them.

BEAUTIFUL PICS.....

I have lots, but here's one I took last night....I thought it was cool.....

definitely not great quality.....but thought it was pretty cool anyway...

FUJI FINEPIX A340..........4.0mp....................hard to take a night shot with it........takes beautiful regular pics....for a camera that has been dropped a zillion times / is cracked / has almost no markings left on the buttons / battery has very short life being cycled so many times.......still a very reliable camera..
