We've started planning our summer vacation to the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming and maybe Idaho. With all of the great scenery that way, I need a good camera. I have been looking at the Canon Rebel T3i. Does anyone have one or another recommendation. My last camera was a 35mm Pentax from the 80s. I'd like to get into taking pictures again.

Get the t3i, best bang for your buck for sure! I run a video production and photography company and that is our most used camera. Cheap and reliable! Plus capable of getting really nice professional looking shots! Then again I use manual everything on the camera (Magic Lantern installed), if you plan on using the auto features I don't know how well the camera does.

 

I've got a 2012 Rebel and it works wonderfully for what I need. Lots of aftermarket accessories and products, and for relatively cheap.

I ended up getting a Canon 60d. Best Buy had a one day sale for $799. I've been using it for a couple of weeks and love it. I don't know if I will ever be able to figure out all that it can do, but will have fun learning.

 

If you've got the dough, check out the sony RX-10. About $1200.

 

60D is a very nice camera!

I have both the 40D and the 50D!! the 60D has a few neat features that mine dont... In the past the ##D lineup has been my favourite balance of hoby-pro cameras.. Started with the 20D myself... but Personally the 60D is not something i see in my future.. Canon wants to get people like myself to move up to the 7D .. Ugh what a price to pay!

best features of the ##D line (10,20,30,40,50, and the 60D).. Fully Manual with 2 dials.
Top one for shutter speed.. And the big one for aperture.

Knowing how to use all of the functions, is over raited.
Knowing the physics of light and camera work is way more valuable.
... Proof: the Most expensive cameras do the least amount of "tricks."

Video is cool but... 80% of the modes on that dial are useless in my opinion.

Oh but anywas... Best lense for ya..
Maybe a low range zoom... 30 or 50 to 100 (any or much longer just go prime)
Well, i take that back, 70/80-300 eh they are ok lenses
50mm F/1.8! Great lens for the price.. dirt cheap! Super light.
One of the Cheapest lense canon makes and the quality really isnt all that bad.

If you want to spend some dough... On a Long lens... get An older prime L series. (Not IS) Quality is noticeably sharper than the zoom lenses!
Ex: "400mm L" is smaller lighter faster and noticeably sharper than the "100-400mm L IS"
Yet they are of similar price..

 

The Canon EOS Rebel T6 DSLR is good, it has lens of 18-55mm.

 

These days it seems like all the DSLRs have figured out the formula, and the market's been kind of upended by the development of phone cameras; everyone's phone has as good a camera as a point+shoot so it's that vs. one of the hobby/pro cameras. Seems like 60D was a great choice -- is it holding up over the years or does it seem like it's already been outmoded?
