Factory swing out install
I wanted to get the spare out of the inside but didn't want to build a bumper mounted carrier, so I thought this was worth a try.
I found a 90' 4runner with a factory tire carrier option. Had the corner
cut out so I could get the internal brackets.
I also bought the whole tailgate, this is very important due to the
internal reinforcements. It also has a stiffer spring to help offset
the extra weight when opening and closing
Here are some pictures of the support brackets.
The brackets are not welded to the outer sheet metal. There are
only 4 spot welds on the inside structure. They are easy to drill out.

So the next step was getting the brackets into the corners. The
bottom one I cut in half and after the install, I welded
it back together.
The upper one required cutting the sheet metal and bending it
out of the way.
Then after careful measurements,I drilled the holes. First using a small bit
to make sure the holes were correct, then a larger one.
Put some sealer on the bolts and install carrier. Then I installed the tailgate
to check fit. It was a factory fit so I tightened bolts and welded the
brackets to the inside structure sheet metal.
Mounted 35" tire,it has no flex or movement.
I then cut off the tire mount so I could raise it because the tire hit the bumper.
Then welded it back on about 2" higher. This worked prefect, tire cleared bumper.
Overall I spent just under $300 and about half a day with the install, not too bad.
