Why does everyone go with a chevy or ford smallblock??

350's give a good bit of torque. With some low gears and some 38s, you shouldnt have any problems crawling, mudding or any offroad touring. theses guys dont always have the money to reinforce and change the whole drive train to put in more torque. its just more money efficent. It all coms down to money, knowledge, parts, and what you want the truck for!

Huh? Small block Chevy is a high revving engine? That's a new one. You're probably confused by all the high performance versions that are out there. The 'classic' 350 TBI had 300 ft-lbs at 2800 RPM and redlined around 5000. The 350 Vortec has 330 ft-lbs at 2800 RPM. B-body LT1 has 330 ft-lbs at 3200 RPM. All so close to your quoted numbers for the Olds engine there is essentially no difference.
If you want more torque, just throw in a longer stroke crank.
327's have the same bore as as 350, but a shorter stroke, making them a less torquey motor. (I've heard people refer to the 5.3 as a 327, which is incorrect. The 5.3 does have more low end and high end torque than a Vortec 5.7, but less mid range torque.)

What a thread. You would think we were racing the big 3 again...
If I HAD to do an engine conversion... I'd put in a turbo diesel. Can you imagine 4 cyl. 3.0L Cummins or something similar? Lots of torque and what a fuel miser..

Yea...but 4bt's arent cheap, and parts arent dime a dozen and readily available. Plus they are HEAVY and vibrate like a mo-fo! Would be a cool swap though. MPG is mid to low 20's, from what I understand. That can be accomplished with a SBC beleive it or not.
I did my 350 swap for the fact that the SBC is cheap, parts are cheap and easy to come by, power is good, and they sound cool!

I second the diesel Idea. The new cummins QSB3.3 has 85-110hp and 215+lb torque. There are others as well int he 3 to 4 liter range that would fit nicely into a toyota. Look for them in tow motors and other similar applications. With a few mods too you could easily get more.

People already have the adapter to hook them to a Toyota transmission too.

Arguably the BEST domestic engine I have EVER seen is a Ford 300 Inline Six.. I had an old econoline with a 240 6 Popper, smaller version of the 300 and that engine had 240K on it, and it was ABUSED, hadn't had the oil changed in five years at one point in its life, dripped every fluid imaginable, burned oil, and coolant, but it was SOLID I woulda trusted that thing with my life.. I might eventually swap in a 300 I6 or a Chevy 350, Seeings as I have one and a nice set of heads, I never have liked chevrolet though, but you can't beat a 350, good solid engine, simple to build, lasts forever.
FYI I knew a dude who ran an offenhouser intake, split headers with straight pipes, big ass cam, and dual webers on his 300 and it out ran a brand new Camaro.. Hehe

I dont meen to get hostile but dont call me dawg.I didnt say that the 350 and 5.0 dont have tourque I just dont think they have enough.Plus they were meant to be hi winding motors not lowend tourque engines thats all Im saying.
And I know theres crawlers on here and I dont get why they dont go for olds engines for the lowend tourque I guess Im just a crazy sob.

torque can be obtained by simply changing your intake
lets take the lt1 5.7 for example they fall flat on their face at 4800 rpm but will spin 15 inch truck tires on a 94 caprice station wagon for over half a block
if thats not torque well i dont know what it
this seems to be a case of dont know wtf your talking abouts

It may just be me but it seems that throwin one of these in your trucks dont make much sense. For one when you wheel you want torque not horsepower. Two they dont have a good lowend tourque even when modified (sp?).I would rather go the extra mile to for tourque than just buy a kit for a chevy small block.Personaly I'm suprised no one has dropped an olds v8 into one yet especially a 403 small block I would love to put one in a toyota considering they have 320ftlbs of tourque at 2800rpm stock. And for all of you who think it would be hard or expensive its not.The 403s used th350s,th400s, and the bolt pattern will bolt to the th-2004r which can use th350 mounts and fits where any th350 will fit.Plus the th-700r4 can be used behind it with an adapter plate. And the they make kits for axle swaps to handle the power, trans mounts for all but one trans selected, and trans to toyota transfercase adapters. All this leaves is a custom 3-4 core radiator, custom twin electric fan setup and shroud,a electric water pump, custom motor mounts, and custom headers.Plus with a few mods these motors will push more than 400ftlbs of tourque at only a few hundered rpm more.I dont know about you but I would love a toyota with that motor.

Its cost why would u want a motor that runs you a bunch of bills to build as to where a 302 u can always find parts for and a 350 you can go buy performance parts right in most parts stores the last thing most people want is a wheeler that if it breaks u cant go find a replacement part for with out having to special order it... plus with a 4 speed with a granny gear on a 350 motor you could pull a two story house down no problem

350 has no torque my ass.
With my 3.0, on 36's with 4.10's, I had to pin it in 3rd gear at 4500 RPM's just to maintain 65mph up a 25% grade.
Now with the 350, same 36's and 4.10s, same tranny, going up the same 25% grade, I can cruise in 5th gear at 2000rpm going 65mph with only a 1/4 throttle. Plenty of power in 5th gear to go as fast as I want.
And its got neck snapping torque off the line. This is a stock 350 with headers/carb/intake. Probably 200hp and maybe 300tq.
