93 toyota 4.3 conversion problems

Alright I have 93? Toyota pickup, it has a 4? suspension and 2? body lift with 35?s, 5.29 gears, Detroit true track in the front and Detroit locker in the rear, the original motor was the 3.0 with a 5 speed, I now have a 1992 4.3 tbi chevy with a 700r4 in it. I bought the motor from a guy I new that rebuilt it, it has foged pistons edelbrock performer cam and edelbrock intake factory wiring harness was used. The shop that did the conversion for me said they had done one of these before so I figured it would be ok. It turns out that wasn?t the case, it took them almost half a year before I got to drive it for the first time and I was not impressed at all. With the edelbrock cam they sent a chip that was suppose to work with the computer it would barely run with that chip so the shop told me, I had found somebody on the internet that directed me to send my chip to fuel injection specialties out of texas, The shop did that, gave them all the information they needed chip was sent there 2 or 3 times and it still does not run right. When I start it up I can?t just turn the key I have to hold the gas down a little till it starts and if its cold out I will have to hold the idle up for a bit before it will idle on its own otherwise it will just die. When I first take off it seems like it has more power but when it gets all the way warmed up it seems like it doesn?t run as good. On the interstate even going up a little hill it will slow down and not hold steady. I hope that somebody has some suggestions on what the problem may be because i know it should have way more power than what it does. any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated

thank you

i'm pretty sure he's talking about the 4.3 vortec out of the s10's and blazers.

hey fullthrottle, i hate to sound like i'm sending you away (welcome btw!!!) but you may find a lot more info on that motor on a GM forum. i really don't know how much knowledge there is for the 4.3 on this forum.

being mechanically inclined I would have to state that you are having timing issues and your advance system for the timing isn't running right. take it into a chevy dealer and have them diagnose the problem for you. timing is my guess... tell me if I am right

the reason I think it is timing related is due to the hard starts and changing performance. I believe the advance on the 4.3 L TBI is vacuum activated and the choke as well.
You could be right camo about it being fuel related as well but the chevy dealer would have the best chance at checking that out via fuel pressure and sensor readings.

Incorrect. It is EFI. The timing is done by the computer base timing is set at the distributor. The problem you could be having is wiring issues and computer issues. The best cam for what you need is the stock cam. Put a stock one back in it along with a stock computer. If you need more info on TBI stuff, go to 3rgen.org or do a Google search. A scan tool is a must so you can read the sensors. Coolant temp could be out of wack as well but you are chasing your tail. Make sure all the wiring is done correctly, the timing is set correctly and if you chose to stick with the Edelbrock cam, then use a professional TBI tuner which you will find on the website I mentioned. Good luck!

James

Thread is 4 years old. Last time the guy was on here was two days after he posted this and a week after he registered. Highly doubt he's coming back to say if he fixed his issue or not.

These types of people are my favorite, come here, ask 1 question stick around for a week and never update if they fixed their problem or not. Really gets my blood boiling.
