4.3 swap in 1989 Pickup with IFS

I am going to look at a 1997 4.3L v6 with transmission and transfer case tomorrow to swap into my 1989 Pickup. I have been looking into different engine swaps for my worn out 22RE. I got a 4" suspension lift that is going to go on regardless and possibly a 2" body lift if I decide to swap this 4.3. Is anybody familiar with an SEFI swap?

im looking to do the same swap in my 90' however ive been told (and i can understand why) to use a tbi 4.3. the cpi motors are to prone to failure as far as the fuel system goes. the dont even last in the orginal chassis so i wouldnt suggest slappin it in the yota. i would deffinently go with a tbi for sure. less mods, simpler design and wiring. im just starting my research now and yotatech has been extremely helpfull. get a donor truck, i just picked up a 92 s10 with the whole drivetrain and complete wiring harness. i also suggest getting a factory service manual for the donor truck as that would ease the wiring whoa's of the swap. i will be posting picks of the swap soon

yea i mean i was gonna get the whole truck with 148,000 on everything and rebuild the motor and have my friends mechanic look at the tranny and tcase and go from there. why does the fuel system fail on the cpi motors? and yea any info i could get on your swap would be a great help. what tranny and tcase are you going to run?

i plan on running a nv3500 5 speed and a 208 t case. the cpi systems fail because the central injector inside the intake manifold crack, leak fuel, make a mess and run like crap. also the cpi motors have intake gasket problems ive seen them where coolant leaks into a cylinder and hydrolocks it. although the base engine itself is tough. me personally i yoked a 4.3 out of a 92 s 10 with throttle body. reason being, less wiring, less sensors to swap, and its basically a electronically controlled carbuerator. the engine produces 160hp to 190hp, and there are a few more tweaks you can make to bump out a few more ponies. best have a full donor truck for whichever motor you decide to use, but as the saying goes, the older the better, and less complex for a backyard budget build. i have tons of pics of dismanteling the s10, but need to post a few more times before i start the tread so keep replying so i can get them up asap!

yea i ended up doing more research on it and found that the information that you have stated and that the poppets for the injection get residue and stick open or closed. usually on one cylinder and leave you running rich or lean with less power and rough ride. i have located an 85 blazer that was swapped with a rebuilt carb'd 4.3 with 5 speed trans and tcase. im pretty sure putting an older motor into a newer vehicle is illegal in VA or atleast thats what i have been told. but im not sure the year of the motor because i believe it was swapped to carb. my cousin has a YJ with a carb'd 350 and had problems with his inspection.

i found a TBI motor with less than 60,000 miles on it and i am going to look at and possibly buy it tomorrow. i believe that if i buy this motor im gonna go with the AA kit and use my stock W56 and tcase.

theres nothing wrong with the cpis if you keep up on maintiance im running a 92cpi 4.3 in my 884runner on 1tons and 37s and it doing great. but with your 4inch lift and 2inch body lift i would make your own motor mounts but lift wise your good to go what specific questions do you have on the 97 motor

well i kinda pissed the guy off with the 97 haha basically flaked on him. i mean it had 160,000 miles on it compared to the like 60,000 that this tbi im going to look at has. i didnt have time to go check it out today but i am making a trip to see it tomorrow. i know the cpi motors make more power then the tbi but i plan on putting a mild cam, TBS, headers, and exhaust on to the TBI. i guess i really dont need any info the CPI motors anymore ha hopefully gonna pick the 4.3 up tomorrow and go to picknpull for a serpentine set up and maybe get lucky and find an engine harness and cpu for the 95 TBI

I went with a 95 cpi . They make 195 hp . The tbi is about 160 hp .Yes the spider injector can leak but they are very easy to fix.
Plus i think they look bad ass.

yea the 4runrun is pretty sweet but i hate the wiring for fuel injected especially when i can hook up like 4 wires and have a built carb'd tbi motor with like 300hp and half the headache. im gonna get my 4.3 bored .030 over with new pistons, heads fully rebuilt, headers, 450cfm quadrajet carb, and exhaust. looks good but im all about simplicity and performance. let me know how the 4runner gets down

today my buddy and I did a little wrenching and got the heads off and cleaned up the motor a little bit. tomorrow we are getting the pistons and cam out then its headed to the shop. i got quoted like $1050 for the machine work which includes bore hone and clean, deck the block, shave the head, pistons&rings, valve job, polish the crank, pressing the pistons, and to get it balanced. not too bad of a price considering my buddy for his single cam honda paid 960 and i have 2 more cylinders.

I think you can run 96 and newer heads " they are real vortec heads and are supposed to flow a lot better and bump up the hp" Lots of good info on " s10forum " here http://www.s10forum.com/forum/262ci-forum-4-3/
Mine was about $1300 for machine work and rebuild kit with all gasket's

thanks for the link. i think i had that one bookmarked before but haven't been there in awhile. when i purchased my motor i got a full set of gaskets that i'm going to give to my machine shop which probably cut of like 100 bucks. and james92toy is your hood just not closed or are you going to have to add spacers?
