Hey everyone,
It's been a while but, after a few years of daily driving my 1st Gen I'm finally going to get started on some updates for it.
I was going to just freshin up the 20R in it but then I came upon this guy for $200.
I changed my mind.
It's complete, (I drove it on the trailer) with about 150,000 miles.
I've done some research, and watched most of Joe's(Doomsday Diesels) videos, my goal is a daily driver/good fuel mileage, small lift, to fit some 33's, and some old school additions(Roll Bar, KC Lights etc.). The only time I use the 4-Wheel Drive is to get to work in bad weather, so it should have plenty of power after a few tweaks.
I'm pretty handy, not a professional but I can do the mechanical, the wiring and some welding/machining, though, more than likely,I'll be buying an adapter kit.
So my question to all of you that have done the swap.
Beside the engine itself, what do I take off the donor?
I've seen a lot of guys wiring up custom Glow Plug relays and Shut off valves. Is this because the factory Mercedes ones are problematic/ overly complicated/ expensive, or because you didn't have access to it?
Thanks in advance for the help. I'll post my progress so this may become a build thread.
you will need the coolant tank mounted on the passenger fender and the glow plug relay off of the drivers fender for sure. I kept the radiator also, but you can go with a Toyota one if you use a custom water neck on the block.
Thanks Monger.
I looked through your build and will be taking notes on your install since most i've read are on later model trucks. Im going to try to keep the factory rad if it'll keep the 617 cool. Are you going to try to run an intercooler on yours?
So, with temps in the 30's and freezing rain forecasted, I figured this weekend was a good time to state the disassembly of the donor vehicle. I needed something to occupy my time until the Chiefs game anyway. Overall the engine came out without any unexpected issues. I jacked the front end up as far as my tallest jackstands would allow(about 20") and was able to get to everything. as most have said, the allen head bell housing bolts were the most difficult but with a combination of extensions and U-joints, I got the engine and trans separated.
Here are a few pictures along with a couple of questions if anyone's following along.
I plan on junking the donor once I'm comfortable I've pulled everything I need off of it, so if anyone needs any parts off of it, they'll be cheap.
Here it is as I pulled it in the shop, Like I said, its pretty complete, I had a video of it running but I must have deleted it.
I started on the passenger side pulling hoses and wiring. I've had a little bit of experience working on European cars when I was over there in the service. I'd forgotten how nice it was compared to American cars of the era. things like the junction blocks for the engine wiring.
And two position hood hinges, so you can pull the engine with hood still attached.
Can anyone tell me what this is hooked to the ALDA? Is it a vac switch that I can somehow use to for the fuel shutoff?
Glow Plug relay.
Out and free!
Saturday turned out Sunny and about 40Deg, with no wind so I figures I could try to clean it up a bit. After plenty of Simple Green and some time with the power washer.
That's it for now. I've got a gasket kit coming, then I'll start getting into it a little more.
I probably wont pull the 20R out of the truck until the late March in case the weather turns again.
More to come.
A little progress, since I've got a feeling this is going to stretch into a total build,
I'm going to continue this over on my intro thread, in the Pre 84 section.
