Official 1JZ/2JZGE 2JZGTE Swap thread

Hi, I have a 1996 toyota 4runner with the 3.4l v6, and 5speed tranny. I have a question, I recently sucked water up and hydro locked my motor, and I swaped with another 3.4 that I got for 400$ After starting it, I could see it needed alot of work. Anyways, I see that S/C's for this motor are around 2k brand new, not including the trd headers etc. I also see that with even more HP stock, and more HP potential for a cheaper price, with out even changing the enternals, is the 2JZ-GTE. I have found this motor alot of places, on ebay, etc, with the stock twin turbo setup ranging from $1900 to $3500.
I how ever cannot find any information on doing the swap with the 3rd gen 4runner. If anybody has any information on this anything will be helpful!! I would most definatly like to take the time to put this powerplant into my truck rather than rebuilding the old motor I found, and then putting even more money into just to begin touching the HP you can get out of the 2jz-gte. Thanks.

can u build a custom oil pan and pickup tube? the 2jz uses an aluminum one that wont fit into a truck, any truck. that is the hard part, u can use the bellhousing off a 5 spd one to mate it up to a w series transmission. the r series bellhousing wont work, they are different lenghts. ive swapped a 7mgte into an 87 excab, it was easy. but the 2jz is a nightmare.

The 2JZ came with two oil pans. Front sump, in the Aristo, and rear sump in the Supra, and Lexus IS, SC, and maybe GS? If one doesn't work, I'm sure the other will.

A Toyota 1JZ bellhousing and flywheel will allow you to bolt an R series trasmission onto the 2JZ, assuming you have a long input shaft. So, you're lookin at late gen R150, an R154, or an early R150 with a swapped input shaft.

As for the swap, there was a guy who did a 1JZ/R154 swap into hjis V6 4runner. Do a google search, I'm sure you can find it. A 2JZ swap will be identical to a 1JZ swap. And yes, they are awesome motors. It's not as hard as people think. If you did a 7M swap into the truck, a 2JZ is not much different. A 1JZ is designed to fit where a 7M was, and a 2JZ is just a bit higher than a 1JZ, and has a LITTLE less clearance behind the rear turbo.

A couple of choices need to be made before you start.
1jz or 2jz: yeah the 2 is 3.0 vers 2.5 of the 1, BUT the 1jz with its r154 Will allow you to avoid cutting your bell housing, your output shaft IS too short to bolt to your transfer case, so you will need to rebuilt the 154 with your output shaft then the transfer will bolt up directly with nothing fabricated. Note: the 2jz that you would get would be JDM (the usdm would be 4k as apose to the 2k you see on ebay) will most likely be from a Aristo, this is a good thing it is much cheaper than the supra's, and if you mount it more rear "As explained below" then it already has a front sump pan that will require less modification to clear.
Next decision: Your V6 sits more forward than the 4; so, you can bolt on your cross member but you will have to put a custom radiator down inside where the condenser and pusher fan is now, or swap a 4's cross member (it is strait as apose to the forward bend of yours) will allow everything to sit further back to fit a stock radiator. Either way you remove the clutch fan and put pushers in front.

Sorry, you say that the R154's output shaft is to short to bolt to 3.4 tcase?

Why can do same with the 2JZ????

The R154 was never meant to be mounted to a transfercase. What you need to do, is swap the output shaft, and rear housing from an R150 (V6 truck/4runner) onto the R154. You can then bolt an R150 transfer case (or maybe more, I'm not sure) to the R154. Then you use a 1JZ bellhousing to bolt the R154 to a 1JZ or 2JZ motor.

2 more questions;

1.- Are the 1JZ and 2JZ bellhousings the same?
2.- Are all 2JZgte VVTi????

No the 1JZ and 2JZ bellhousings are not the same.

The 2JZ has two different bellhousings. There was the 2JZ-GE bellhousing, which allows you to bolt a JZ motor to a W series transmission, and there was the 2JZ-GTE bellhousing, which is actually part of the Getrag V160 transmission, so it's useless in this circumstance.

The 1JZ-GTE came in front of an R154 only, and that is the bellhousing you want to use. That will allow you to bolt a JZ motor to a R154.

As for VVTI, no, VVTI only came out on the 2JZ (and 1JZ for those curious) around 1998. From 1991-1997, they had no VVTI. The 2JZ-GTE ceased production around 2002, while the 2JZ-GE is still in production for Lexus.

1JZ GTE VVTi swap question

I am planning to swap this engine (JDM) in a car that is not a Supra. But reading the parts calalog and wiring diagram, there are couple of parts that not really what are they for and if the engine will run without it (or how to skip it).

This is a parts diagram where you can see the "Fuel Pump Control" and "Throttle Control", that are inside the car, so will not came with the engine (ebay USA).



Thanks in advance for your help, there is nobody that could help me down here.

the 1jz-gte also came with a A-3040-LE, witch is just a AE with a locking converter, these are the 2 wheel version of the AH used is v6 auto's ,"this is the one with that awful integrated hydrolic transfer case". the 1jz with it's bell housing will actualy bolt right up to your factory auto "i would not recommend it", but you can, and i did just to get proper placement and work on fitting, i have put some effort in to trying to figure a way to use the ALE that came with the 1j and make it 4x4 with an old t-case from a I4 auto with divorceable t-case. i'll let ya know

^^ I meant that as far as 5 speeds go, it only came with an R154

Most Toyota motors also come with some form of an A340, and almost all of them can be mixed and matched.

2jz-ge into 3vz 2nd gen

i just bought an '88 3vz 5 speed pickup. one of my friends is swaping a 1jz in his sc300 i was wondering what it would take to put his stock motor in my pickup.

need info on 2jz swap

i have a 96 toyota t100 im looking to put a 2jz motor its 4wd and i was wondering if anyone out there has done this swap in a 4wd and if i should need to do anything special to get this to work like the tranmission and transfer case i would like to know i want to make this thing make the 35s spin on dry pavment ha of coourse something else i am looking into is making it a solid front axle and a eight lug conversoin any ideas on that aswell??? help
