Mike,

Are you keeping your stock steering setup? I bent the shaft of my steering box in the recent accident and a new Toyota box is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Insurance Co. wants to use a NAPA steering box and other misc. steering components so I don't have to total the truck.

Damn, you must have really hit hard. I'll be reusing the stock steering - even when the SAS happens, you need to use the IFS box.

Was there some point in the tranny removal process that the rest of the ATF comes gushing out? I just don't want a big oil spill in my garage and want to be ready. Thanks Cebby

I haven't seen it yet, but that doesn't mean it still can't happen. The torque converter is full of fluid as is the transfer case (since it shares fluid with the trans on the A340H). I'm figuring tipping the assembly up on end should help it drain. I only pulled the drain plug - didn't even drop the pan - but I did stick the plug back in after I let it drain overnight initially. There's a chance more fluid is in the pan now - I'll pull the plug next time I'm down there.

I've found that the restaurant bussing pans work well for keeping fluids off the floor.

Hey Cebby, how did you get these wires disconnected?

They both are on the drivers side of the 3.0 tranny/TC and have a little rubber boot . The wires continue through inside the tranny without any plug.

Those don't go "into" the trans as far as I remember. There is a junction. As you can see, I dropped my trans without removing those. There were a few plugs on top of the bellhousing also (maybe for those items?).

I thought I had a better shot of this (when I pulled the motor forward to get the BH bolts). You can sort of see the wiring coming down over the top of the trans and down the passenger side of the bellhousing. Look at lower edge of the pic in the center.

The only plug I pulled from the trans (IIRC) was the big rectangular one by the linkage connection. Everything else had a connector inline with the harness elsewhere.

Well, the idea of removing the guts of the fan oil pump to turn it into an idler pulley seemed simple enough. Little did I know what I was in for. Every puller I tried was ineffective to remove the pulley. So I finally go over to the shop press and have at it.

Good news and bad news. Good news is that I got it off. Bad news is that I pringled the pulley in the process. The pulley is unusable.

So, I initially set out to find an idler assembly that bolts into the same spot. This is available on some models of 1UZ - namely the models that have electric fans. I was told LS400's, but I have yet to confirm that.

Anyway, here's the item I'm referring to:

The offending pulley...

The whole unit:

With all the other stuff stripped off:

It's off - can't tell from the pic, but the pulley is fubar.

Here's what's inside:

For reference, this pulley was right above the crank pulley:

It turns out that some of the folks on the Lextreme forum have just removed this item and are running a shorter belt. The only potential issue is that the crank pulley then only has about 30% wrap on it down from maybe 50%+. I'm concerned about what might happen with water crossings and belt slippage - plus if I add a higher output alternator for a welder or want to add a supercharger, I might have issues with belts slipping. I'm scouting for a pic of the idler to #1 see if I can locate one or #2 see if it's possible to fabricate something.

Thanks Cebby that helps alot, they must have plugs where all that bundle of wires comes together. I couldn't see one yesterday but I'll look again today, it's hard to follow which bundle is which sometimes.

Yeah a bustub would come in real handy for catching fluids

No, just the driveshaft. The diff wasn't really in the way. FWIW, I don't run any diff drop either.

I second the impossible to remove the A340H WITHOUT pulling the motor while still connected. I had the same thing on mine but i stuggled for almost a full hr trying to get them off before i said screw it and started pulling the whole nine yards out.

Had i had more overhead space i could have gotten both the motor and trans out the engine compartment with out having to fight the trans down to the ground like you had to do cebby.

Damn the 1UZ isn't in the truck yet?>>??
I would just wire the engine to run independently and put a manual trans to it. They seem to do this all the time in Aus and they even sell wiring harnesses that you just plug in and feed it fuel and water and VROOM!

It would be nice to also have your accessories work, like AC, cruise and gauges.

OK, you've been hired to sit next to me and hold one of those hand held fans to keep me cool.

The accessories have a little something to do with belt length - as it stands, I might have to ditch my stock LS400 belt since I'm now changing the oil pump to an idler of some sort (or nothing).

Hmmmm I haven't even thought about cruise - especially since I never used it with the 3.0. I can do that late though...

Yeah I promised my wife that we would be able to use the cruise if I got a more powerful engine I figured out with the 3.0 we can use the cruise with the OD turned off, but then we can only go 65mph.

Hey guys I'm going to LA to pick up a 1UZ for me also. I'm going to keep things simple so that others can learn from my work and do it quick. A friend of mine is wanting me to throw in a Jericho racing transmission he's willing to donate but that's a little out of reach for most people and it would be nice to keep this whole conversion with using factory Toyota stuff. I was planning on a 5spd Toy trans but we'll see how it goes when the time comes to adapt one when I have the engine in front of me.
I can't hold out any longer.!
