What would you pay for a 3.4L?
Iv been poking around craigslist and google trying to find myself a nice 3.4. Its looking like im going to have to buy a pulled engine and not a donor, i just have no place to keep something like that. Got the ok by my dad to keep an engine at his house while i work on getting everything i can for the swap before doing it. Trying to keep the downtime to a minimum.
Iv found a place in Sacramento, toyota wrecking yard: alltoyotatrucksuvparts.com . They have the 5vz-fe for $2300, that is a type of "kit" for a swap into an older truck like many do here. I dont have an exact parts list of what that comes with but he mentioned it does have the ecu computer bellhousing and wiring harness. I know there is more i will need. Also it is "rebuilt" whatever that means from a place like this i dont know. With out a "kit" they offer the engine for $1300 or $1500 rebuilt.
How would you feel about that price? I know im going to pay more this way but its just not possible for me to get a donor and strip it down. Living in downtown San Francisco right now paying 175$ for my parking spot already! ANd i cant really keep a rolled truck out front of my parents house either so, im buying an engine and will do the swap there when i have all my pieces aligned.
Thanks for any input, much appreciated.

I bought my complete 3.4 with an auto tranny, ECU, wiring harness, Marlin gear drive adapter, and many other little things for $550. I probably only need another $200 or so worth of stuff to get it going. I think this was a fantastic deal... But I just wanted to tell you for a frame of reference. Just FYI, I wasn't even looking for a 3.4. I just stumbled across the deal on craigslist, and then decided to do it. So you may try there.

Make a parts list of what you need from a doner vehicle. Pull up out the yellow pages and go through the auto wreckers section. Call up everyplace that is listed tell them what you want. I found a place that called me back when they had a fresh roll over/ complete rig. That way you get everything from the same rig without a crushed shell sitting around. My cost was 1600 for everything i needed from the donor rig.

I paid $850 for engine, wiring, O2 sensors, remote start, cruise control, ecu, all vsv's and under hood relays and fuse boxes, MAF etc. The only thing I didnt pull was the broken air box.
Infact I think I got almost the whole front end minus the metal work. I spent about another $100 on oil, filter, fpg, a/c refrigerant, plugs etc. I didnt need a timing belt or water pump as they had just been replaced.
The only 2 down side to mine were because it was a roll over. Oil was everywhere it shouldn't have been so the block is filthy, and when it rolled over it broke the intermediate intake runners. Fortunately I got a complete intake populated with all sensors, fuel rail and injectors for $100 that was shiny clean. Score!
I'd say no more than $800 - 900 for a complete engine with accessories, wiring and ecu.

well i found another place today that does a bundle for the swap. Somewhere in fresno california. Talked them down to about $1500 for a manual and all parts i would need. According to them at least. I still dont even know every last one ill need. Guess its time to start making that list. I have this feeling whatever this bundle is, its not going to be everything i need..

i'd say about 8-1200 depending on the mileage... I'm currently shopping around for one for my truck. of course i've found places that have them, but i'd rather find the right price with the right mileage.

Is that with everything? You keep me posted on where in California you find them for 800-1200 with it all the accessories! Im still trying to find anything in that pricerange. CraigsList has been pretty dry..

I paid $1700 in San Diego for everything I needed less an air box (thought I was going K&N and changed my mind). I had to buy a new evap box after that since I didn't realize until months later that one of the tubes was cracked. Not a great deal but not bad for a motor with only 60k on it. It was a fresh rollover, 2wd automatic 4runner.

Well.. you're in the bay area... but if you're willing to drive to Rancho Cordova ( its about an hour away ). Give Specialized Parts Planet a call. Their number is 916-631-9100. I believe their going price for a 3.4 with everything was close to 1200-1600 depending on the mileage you want.

I'd try craigslist some more for wrecked ones. I see them every so often. lso, try Davez off road in Placerville. Dave's great guy.
I paid $1800 for my 97 Runner with a smashed front end. I parted it out and made about $3000 of parts, so essentially I made $1200 and got all my swap stuff for free. I also have still have some various parts to sell as well.
