What transmission do you have?
I have 5 spd and think that I need to change to 4.88 for the 3.4.

 

I have the 5 speed.

 

That's terrible number. What if you drive really easy would your millege be better?
I'm hoping for better results like some other guys here.

 

I'm reviving this thread because another thread popped up with similar subject.
I'm almost done with my swap....except for the evap stuff.
I'm thinking that I need to change my gearing to match and to take advantage of better fuel economy. I'm thining 4:88 or back to 4.56.

 

Look at RobD saying he gets 26mpg with 4.10s and 33s. That's what I want. I'd trade my 4.88s for some 4.10s.

 

I have SAS with 35's now. 33's would look kinda silly on my truck. Maybe I should lower my SAS with 3" spirngs.....

With "spirited" driving, I'm averaging 18-20 mpg mixed (mostly city).

But I have an alignment issue with the truck pulling to the left, so that increases my rolling resistance. Plus she idles at around 300 rpm, so the engine is not running at it's best.

 

I found the spec for 5spd 3.4 T100 with 31" tires.....it came with 4:10 gear.
So I'm thinking that with my 35's I should get either 4.56 or 4.88.

calculated my fuel economy from a show last year , I avereged 24 MPG .. this was mostly hiway

mostly mixed highway city, hilly terrain I'm getting about 17-18 mpg, like mentioned earlier i was getting between 10-11 mpg because the exhaust shop installed the o2 sensors in the wrong spot they thought they were the same because the plug was the same, be sure and check this people or make sure you have the right one completely, I have an a/f ratio gauge and it would read about 9.5-10.5 no matter what I did to the tune now it is at a happy 14.5-14.8 and Im seeing a ~7 mpg gain!

 

I think you can do even better if you regear it to 4:10.
I'm running 35's and thinking about regearing to 4.88 or 4.56.

 

Wow, it's been over a year since I last replied to this thread. Well I have since supercharged my 3.4 and I'm happy to report that mileage stayed the same. It is still a sucky 12.8 mpg. Had I known about the power of the 3.4 I would have used a taller gear. The 4.88s keep rpm too high for good mileage. But it is still a rock crawler at heart.

 

RunnerMike, you think we should go with 4.56?
What is your RPM at 70 mph in 5th?

 

Anthony1, I am spinning 3000 rpm at about 70. The 4runner rides on 35'' Goodyear Wranglers. I think 4.56 would be a good ratio to use.

 

Thanks. I started out with 4.56 stock ...dang, I should've kept the gears.....lol.
Think I can reused my bearings and pinion collar if I replaced the r&p not long ago?

 

Honestly I think I could do better with the gears I have now if I could keep my foot out of it, just can't help myself ever since I did the swap! Lol not that the 4.10's wouldn't help even more!

 

I would replace pinion bearings because they could get damaged when pressing off.

 

I've been thinking of ditching my over complicated 05 tacoma to go back to this generation truck but all the nice ones I've found have been 3.0's. I would think a relatively stock 5 speed truck with a 3.4 swap and 31" tires should get around 20 MPG. At least that's what I'm hoping. Or I could swap in the entire 22re drivetrain from my 89 regular cab.
