You can get pretty cheap 1996 to 1999 for under 5K now if you want stock. I saw a few on Craigslist in my area. They are high miles though.
I think I got lucky with 95 T100 3.4 engine with no EGR with 2WD ECU.

I took my truck on the frwy a few times with the GPS....65 mph, 5th gear, 3K rpm, 5.29 grear.
In the past, with the 3.0 engine, 5.29 was the one to go with 35's.
I'm definitely going to regear down to 4.56. I hope to cruise at 65mph at 2K -2.5K rpm range.
I'm sure my millage is better with 3.4 but I think it can better with 4.56.

I went on a short trip today. I got 16 mpg using GPS trip feature. I'll report back after I regear to 4.56. It's better than with 3.0 for sure. even at 16mpg.

My last 2 tanks I've gotten 14 and 16mpg just driving around town. I'm looking fwd to seeing what it will do on a long trip.
The first wasn't a full tank and soon after I got my o2 changed to fix a lean condition. I think it will only get better.
I'm running 33" BFG A/Ts with 4:56 gears and a 5speed.

Using a GPS, what is your speed at 3K in 5th gear?
You have manual right?

This is with the swap right? I think the stock 3.4 engine with 31" has 4.10 in it.

I recently bought a 98 4runner limited auto 4x4 with 280k miles. It's stock with 265-16 tires and factory 4.30 ratio. This is my first experience with a stock 3.4 in it's factory setting. I am getting 15mpg city and 19 highway. 2400 rpm at 70mph, this seems like a good milage rpm to aim for.

So the auto with 265/70 (31) came with 4.30....this would place the manual with 31 at 4:10.

I don't know for sure if the 5spd has 4.10s but it would make sense. If anyone is in doubt, you can call dealership parts with axle code and last 8 of vin. They can look it up.

WOW, Not good. Do you have both of your o2 sensors hooked up and working? You need to look at your data stream to see if your in closed loop and check fuel trims.

I had this issue with mine and it wasn't even throwing a light. I didn't really find out until I tried to smog it and it was all out of whack. I replaced the first 02 sensor and the mileage went up to around 15 around town. I have a 5 speed with 4:56 gears and 33's

I have had my swap done for just over a year and average anywhere from 12 to 15 mpg's. I had 4.88s but regeared to 4.30 since it felt like it was going to fall apart on the freeway. I also am running the 31.5s stock tire size. The 4.30 was a good switch but still getting crappy milage. Mostly around 13. Get about 200 per tank or so. Also, I went to a 5sp when I swapped out the 3.0. probably a wiring issue somewhere.Getting ready to S/C but worried about milage. Anyone in the area that could look at fuel trims or printouts (sac area)?? I have a hesitation when I stomp on the pedal so not sure if it is related. Not hijacking sorry

I would get a wideband A/F ratio gauge installed especially if your going to add the SC. Any tuning? URD?

Timmj, I wouldn't worry about the mileage getting worse, just do it. Mileage may even get better. If you have an K&N drop in air filter get rid of it and clean the oil off your mass air flow hot wire. This may help the hesitation.

Milage after the swap is way better

94 4Runner
5 Speed
stock 4.30 gears
31-10.5-R15 good year wranglers

I am getting around 270 miles to the tank before I start to think about getting gas. Has averaged around 17 MPG with between dirt and town driving. My 4Runner does not see a lot of freeway time. My 3.slow had 216K and was getting around 13 MPG on a good day. It ran good, but was a tired motor.
