Vss

Did the swap a while ago and finished it up around Jan. Put about 30 miles on it and only codes it threw were O2 related which made sense since there was no O2 in the new exhaust. Simple fix right... LOL

Well then the truck has sat for a LONG time since cause I moved onto the rest of build. It's back on the ground and ready for driving though again finally. Between yesterday and today it's probably got 50 miles on it. I'm getting a P0500 which is a VSS issue. I've done some reading about connecting the 3 wire sensors to the 2 wire sensors on the transfercase, etc...

Issue though, my truck is a 2WD manual transmission. Do I even have a VSS? If so, where is it found on the 2WD trucks? Transmission I'm assuming? The only harness coming from it though has been plugged in and I'm assuming is working. It's been a long time though since I was under there so I'm starting to research it. I'll crawl under it tonight while I install the O2 but I was looking to get a head start as to what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Khris

Nothing huh?

The original truck is a 1989 3.0L manual 4x2 platform and the donor 3.4L is similar and has a 2001 manual 4x2 ECU.

Did my '89 have a VSS to begin with?

The swap is running flawlessly at this point with about 200 miles on it now total other then the VSS engine lights and O2 engine lights which I plan on taking care of this weekend finally.

I can see a lot of interest in here for this topic eh?

Got the O2 sensor installed last night. Took care of that code... Only remaining one is my VSS issue. P0500

From what I understand the ECU picks up the VSS information off the OE cluster. My issue is I'm not running the OE cluster. I'm assuming the speedo cable drives the OE cluster and it somehow turns that cable spinning into a signal to feed back to the ecu right?

Is there a way to fake this system? I swear I've heard of units that can go inline on the speedo cables that will put out a pulse but you need to know how many pulses your system operates on. Anyone have any ideas or info?

Right now basically when I drive, it'll throw a VSS code within about the first 5 minutes. I clear the code on the fly and then it seems to stay off.

Anyone think an inline speed signal generator like this would work? They only list apps for GM and Jeep. I'm guessing it's cause they tune them for a different frequency of pulses?

Getting closer... I guess if I bit the bullet and swapped to an electronic speedo this would possibly work...

I've found this... Think this will give me what I need assuming it's just a thru passage cable with the pulse generator in the middle?

#4 below

It's got this as a description...

Quote:
Part # 4PAC-TOY. Four-pulse sine wave for Toyota with 22 mm metric thread and .187 tang drive

Think I can thread this into the side of my transmission, then thread my cable into the other end and run the wiring right off it???
