Inchworm adapter all drilled and plugged accordingly. I'm using 0* of clocking (stock) because I'm too chicken to do otherwise.

Bellhousing removed to take out bearing and old grease seal

Generous coat of Permatex around entire area of transfer case that will make contact with the adapter. Put it around the bearings too, not just the perimeter.

And adapter installed onto the transfer case.

Put the 21-23 spline coupler on the transmission output shaft, lightly greased. The put the bellhousing back on. Put locktite all over the grease seal extension (the metal cylinder thing around the shaft) and beat it in. Put the new grease seal in, and grease it up.

Put a ton of Permatex all over the permieter of the bellhousing, and put on the trans case with the adapter installed. Be the alignment pins are in the bellhousing, and also youll have to spline up the coupler to the trans case. I did it without a trans jack. Just me and my dad. Bolt it up.

Now I need some help from you a340f auto guys. Which front driveshaft did you use? My transmission dipstick is squarely in the way of the front driveshaft too. Relocate that, or t100 pan, or what?

Next, what does your trans case mount/ crossmember set up look like? I can use either the 3.4 mount, or the gear drive case mount. Both are useable. Did yall use the stock crossmember or fab a new one?

Lastly, I'm using a torch to heat up and bend my 3.4 transfer case lever to make it work in the cab. I could use the stock gear drive lever also. What have y'all done for that solution?

Thanks to Etravoda for the tips on finishing this bad boy up. He also used an adapter plate for the transfer case to crossmember installation. The original gear driven case mount partially sits on the crossmember. I used a 1/4" plate and drilled 8 holes in it. Bolted the mount to the plate, then the plate to the crossmember. I can post a pic if anyone is interested. It's pretty crude looking, but stout as heck. It should (and probably will) be my final solution. Etravoda also suggested all of the following:

The transfer case lever comes up in the wrong place so a forward extension is necessary. I used the newer gen 3.4 transfer case lever. You could also use the original gear drive lever, but the 3.4 is shorter= shorter throws. Cut the transfer case lever.

Little piece of stock about 1.5" long. I drilled a hole to fit the bottom shaft into.

What it looks like finished up. This is perfect length of extension to make it come up in the right spot in the console.

I put the 3.4 shifter base back down using some RTV to seal it up really good. Then I used self tapping screws to mount it.

I'll go ahead and reference it here, but for those doing the same swap as me, using the newer a340f, you must save and use the transmission pan from the original automatic a340h. The a340f dipstick is squarely in the way of where they front driveshaft bolts in. You cannot bend it enough to get it out of the way. You might be able to cut it off, seal it, and put a new dipstick on the other side, but I'm not going to try. Again, you must use the older auto transmission pan. I've been told (Etravoda) it bolts right up, and it's not necessary to even swap the filters/pickup parts- just the pan. That'll be my next post after I find a pan.

Hi I have been doing some research and I was brought here. I'm new to this forum and I need some help. so I have a 1993 4runner 4x4 automatic and I'm doing a complete engine swap taking the 3.slow with transmission and transfer case out of it and putting a 3.4 engine, automatic transmission, transfer case and wiring harness of course out of a 1996 4runner. now the thing is that the front differential from my 1993 4runner is on the right side as well as my transfer case. now the transfer case from the 1996 4runner is on the left side and well as the front differential, now my question is will it be better to take the front differential out of the 1996 4runner and put it on mine and will it fit? or is it easier to get some type of an adapter for it? thank you for taking your time reading my post I tried to explain my self as best as I could hope to hear from someone soon!

Hey man, I sent you over here to read through his build and find the exact answer you are looking for, not just to re-ask the exact same question.

Good luck with your swap but you really need to start doing a lot of reading. Just about everything has been asked and addressed multiple times over, the hard part is finding the info but that's what the search box and google are for.

Thanks for such a detailed build. Have reread entire post a few times and this is one of the best 3.4 auto build threads I have found. I am in the process of doing pretty much the same build in a 90 4runner but using the t100 a340f and ecu/wiring harness so the tcase drops on the right side. The mechanical part comes fairly easy, but the EWD's are a pain to decipher.

Hey thanks! I hope it will help you. When I do another swap I will use the t100 transmission too for ease/speed of installation. You can learn the EWDs. I knew nothing about them when I started and just kept at it. You'll mess up, but then you'll fix it. Good luck!

Here's what I landed upon using for the center console. It's from a 4th gen Tacoma with a 4 cylinder automatic. The 3rd gen 4runner console didn't match up well without major hacking. The stock 2nd gen console can easily bolt up to this console with very minor trimming, but I just haven't installed mine.

Out of curiosity, is your 4runner an electronic speedo or mechanical? Sold my 90 runner and starting on the 95 but its a mechanical speedo and wandering if I am going to need marlins vss to get the tranny to shift right. Been searching for a couple days and so far yours is the only other 95 auto build I can find. It's amazing changing the search criteria just a little will net different results. Lol. Found the answer right after I posted this

Then I hope to confirm what you found... The 95 went back to a mechanical speedo. However the mechanical speedo is converterd to an electrical signal on the back of the cluster. That is the signal the tranny uses. It's splice is somewhere in the body harness and is an easy splice.

Yes that is what I read. I haven't gotten as far as the EWD's yet and waiting on the adaptor for the transfer case. Just wanted to make sure I didn't need something else before I got it put in the runner.

Thought the 3.4 swap crowd would like to see the evolution of my 4runner since the swap.
