Thanks for the suggestions Monch. Regarding the fan clutch, I have tried 2 of those as well, neither makes a difference. At speed, cooling shouldn’t be a problem, fan or not.

Another update…

I couldn’t quite justify the coin for the TRD 160 degree t-stat without knowing if it would actually make a difference so I picked up a cheap 170 instead. Installed it and bled the system really good by squeezing the hoses, punching the throttle, heater on, etc. Operating temps dropped about 15 degrees and never got above 195!! I would still like it to run a little cooler so Im having my buddy at the Toyota dealer get me the 160 degree t-stat.

This solution doesn’t completely seem logical, but a cooling system isn’t that complicated and I have tried so many different things that I’m willing to accept it.

I also pressure tested the cooling system and had pretty good results. The pressure dropped a little over 1 psi in about 30 minutes which confirmed that I have no major coolant leaks and exhaust gas isn’t seeping into the cooling system. I did find that most of my heater hoses started to weep around the 15 minute mark, so those were tightened up.

I would recommend the pressure test to everyone performing their swap. It is a good comprehensive check worth doing, especially for trail rigs demanding high performance and reliability.

I apologize for jacking your thread Monch, but this stuff seemed relevant so I figured I’d close the loop here. Thanks again for the help.

fan part numbers?

I had read up about the different fans and after completing my swap using the donors 3.4 fan and no shroud (idling temps upward of 200), realized I needed to get a shroud on there. Since my 3.0 came with the ring style fan I ordered the blade type from partsgeek (#959-909). This fan is smaller in diameter than the 3.4, but it's also thicker. It will not clear the bolt on my power steering pulley. There's another fan on partsgeek with a different part number- dorman 620-535. It's more expensive and the vehicle fitment list is identical. So, I'm confused. How many fans did they make for the 3.0? Is one of the blade type thinner than another?
I'm almost ready to trim the blades of the fan that I have, though I hate to for balance reasons. Any insight would be appreciated.
