i never thought i'd say this, but that whole referee business makes me glad to be in new jersey...

though i do have a long complicated story about how they screwed my brother with his emissions tests.

So do you have to start the car and drive around or he just looks at it?

Dntsdad and cadman both have pretty good posts regarding the ref. For the most part they're running the car on a dyno, and also running around the car looking at all the emission's equipment and also checking the obd2 system to make sure all the self tests have been completed.

It seems that my guy was harder to pass than most it seems from reading other posts. He went over everything with a fine toothed comb. There is no way in hell he would have passed a drivers drop. First question out of his mouth was where does the exhaust come down at? are you using the stock crossover/downpipe? i was of course so that was good.

My ref pulled something like an All-Data sheet that had every component and of the emissions system. He checked to make sure everything was there.

then they run the OBD2 system and make sure that all the monitors have ran, they all passed, and that there are no codes.

The they put it on the dyno machine and run the regular smog check.

the upside is I got a smog check for $8 that works for the DMV and is good for 2 years............actually 3 for mo because this last renewal I didn't require a check for some reason.

If you have a scanner/Scangauge. or OBD2 plug that hookes to your laptop, it will tell you if its ready to smog because it knows if all the monitor tests have run and have passed.

For a regular smog check, you can have up to 3 monitor tests not have run and reported to the ECM and still pass. For a REF inspection, you can have none not have ran yet. Everything has to be perfect!

That is in my area. Your area ref may vary

I ran the smog check ready using Actron unit. It has a few that's n/a. Does this means that those things don't apply or that It can't find it?
The rest said ok.
