P0500 Code - Vehicle Speed Sensor

90 pickup, 99 4Runner, both manuals. I have the SPD wire from Combometer (Plug C1-20 G-L) going to ECM SP1(E12-22 G-O). I see many others have done this same wiring with success, however I am getting a P0500 vehicle speed sensor code. Any thoughts or ideas what I can check?

Thanks,

Ian

There is a few threads out there about this topic, but they all say to do what I have done and wire the VSS output of the combo meter to the ECM.

I pulled my conversion harness and confirmed that:

1. I wired the vss to the correct pin of the ECM on my conversion harness.
2. That my conversion harness vss wire and the body harness are in the correct location.

Basically combo meter to plug C1 pin 20 G-L wire goes to ECM plug E12 pin 22 G-O, so this is all correct, and in theory the ECM should be recieving the vss signal.

Next step is to test the combo meter to confirm that a vss signal is being sent out. Anyone know how to do this? I have looked in the FSM but it doesn't show it (or I missed it). My speedo is working so I assume it is generating a vss signal. I have a spare combo meter, maybe I will pull the speedometer and swap it out and see if that changes anything.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to test, or where to go next?

Thanks,

Ian

Solved! But not fixed......

I swapped the speedometer out of the combo meter and now have a vss signal, too bad the speedo is 20km/h slow. I bet this explains why my cruise control quit working a year or so ago. VSS signal quit working.

Needle is below the 0 when not moving.

Yes, if I remember correctly, the Cruise Control unit takes an input from the speed sensor and won't allow it to turn on below a certain speed.

It looks like someone took the speedometer needle off at some point and didn't get the needle back on zero, which can be tricky to do.

I am glad you figured out the problem!

Final post I swear! I had a look at both speedometers, and realized I was able to swap the vss sensor over to the original speedometer. Remove 2 screws and that's it. Now the ECM is getting a signal and my speedometer is correct.

I hope this info helps future Toyota owners.

This reads the mechanical signal and creates a pulse electronic signal.
Remove these 2 screws and it comes off.
