haha I felt the same way. Make a small tap mark to start, and use that to guide the bit. Spray oil or dip the tip of the bit when it smokes and you should be good. When you tap the union in, be careful my buddy gave it one too many whacks and a part of the block chipped off, SCARY! A lil JB weld and we were back in business luckily.
