Hey guys, I don't want to further pollute the forum of 3.4 swaps but I need your guys' opinion. I'm a college kid, just got home from his freshman year for summer break. I always need to have a project going, and this summer I am tentatively planning on a 3.4 swap. (If my dad will let me have the garage) 😅. Here's the deal though, I've done all my research and I know everything I need (crossover pipe, wiring conversion kit from toyonlyswaps.com, etc). I just need your guys opinion on whether I should do it or not. I have a 3.0 v6 right now that is still running pretty strong. I have about 80,000 on the rebuild the previous owner did. I myself am no mechanic, I can weld and know my way around a car. I'm pretty confident I can do the swap, but I only have a month to do it. Should I do it now or wait until (not if, but when) the 3.0 goes out? Any opinions or anything would be great! I'll answer any questions or anything ASAP. oncw again, sorry for polluting!

Take the time to gather the best engine and other parts that you will need at the lowest costs.

 

Since my '89 1stGen's 3.slo is pretty much dead, I'm researching swaps. A 3.4 seems the most popular (and probable), but I can get a complete, drivable (rolled), Sequoia V8 donor vehicle cheap. A Toyota V8 would be great, just not sure the extra effort would be worth it. Opinions ? Thanks !

Save your money. Use it for education. When you get a real job, you can do whatever you want.... in your own garage, even.

 

This is also a reply to millball, but thanks guys. That makes a lot more sense than sinking into the project now. I think I'll do it that way, run the 3.0 for whatever life it has left in it and bide my time and pickup parts here and there. Thanks guys!

 

Myself if your conditions permit get a second vehicle for the swap unless you already have two to drive.

I know what a pain it is when your only vehicle is tied up in a project. Being dependent on someone else for every ride .

I am guessing your far enough away at school getting home is not a option .

While a month should be enough time Mr. Murphy can put in a visit to anyone. I think he lives with me!!

 

Yeah, I go to school up in Laramie, WY, which judging by your name it seems like you live in Wyoming as well! But I live down in Fort Collins during the summer with my family. I'll definitely heed your advice though. Perhaps I'll do it next summer when I should have about two months to complete it instead of just this one, and I'll be able to procure an extra car from my buddy to use.

 

I have traveled US 287 many a time back in the day.

In my opinion the 3.4 swap is the best mod. that you can do to the older Toyota's.
But, if you are on a limited time schedule, you may want to wait - as long as you have a choice.
It is a fairly simple swap, but there are always roadblocks along the way. I am currently on my 3rd 3.4 swap and I still have questions sometimes about what will work with what (this ECM with that wiring harness, etc.). Take you time and sort out as much as you can BEFORE you start the swap.
