Is that the evap from the 4runner/tacoma? or is that from a different car. It doesn't look like its from a 4runner/tacoma

its the newer style from an 03 tacoma my buddy has one so i've been tracing the hoses and such just not sure where to connect the two wires for the vsv that is attached to it. I might also have to drill my fuel tank for another fitting but not sure yet ... but it came from the same 2003 tacoma that i got my ecu and engine harness from. Getting pretty close to the end now and this is one of the setbacks... guess i just need to check out my buddies truck and see where all the hoses go...pretty much all i have left is the computer wiring!

I'm in the same situation. I have a 02 4runner with the pressure sensor from the tank. My plan is to drill a hole in the top where the fuel pump goes in.

Hope it works out for you! Is your swap a 4x4 or 2wd?

it is a 1992 toyota 4x4 receiving a 2003 4x4 manual ecu. This board has been a great help and streamlined the whole process incredibly!

Were you able to find the vapor pressure sensor? I'll snap a picture of it when I get home. I'm going to need to do this soon. Any plans on how you are going to mount the box or run the lines?

i have'nt had a chance to make it down to the wrecking yard yet but i know its still on the donor... if you could post a pic it would be great! As far as mounting it goes ill probably just mount it sideways like it sits on a stock 2003 maybe weld in a tab or so...

Just got home! Here you go:

I still have a large amount of wiring left before I tackle this. There are only a few people that I have found that have this issue and even less who document it.

Good luck!

Nope this has nothing to do with fly by wire throttle it has to do with the evap system ...

Yes sir the swap is throttle by wire. It may not be as easy, but I think I did enough research to get her going.

I don't see where the problem would be if I'm practically changing everything over to the donor 5vz parts.

5vz motor
5vz ECU
5vz Transmission
5vz EVAP and emission controls
5vz engine harness

There are very few who have done it and zero that have documented. I'm going to documented it for others see that it can be done.

Thanks for wishing us luck,

Do you have any photos of your swap?

If your motor is out of an 03 tacoma. You have a throttle cable, but you also have drive by wire. If you look at the wiring diagram the electronic throttle control is spliced in a few different areas to obtain a signal. Extra work, but newer motor!

Pictures would be awesome!

Thank you,

Ok so what exactly am I looking for to be connected as part of the drive by wire system? Wiring wise?

Ok well first of all you need power to the throttle body motor and clutch.

Toyota uses a 15 amp fuse in the fuse box and sends 12v+ off to the ecu. Its connector E14 pin 8 (for a 2002 4runner). The wire is green. Check it out (in the EWD it is referred to as "ETCS":

If you are using the donors fuse box. Then you should be set already. If you want to keep the wiring simple just find a spot on the 3vz fuse box and put a 15 amp fuse in there.

If you have the engine harness then all you have to do is physically plug in the accelerator pedal sensor as well as the throttle position sensor. I believe the evap is tied into there also. These signals are sent to the ecu and used for the throttle control motor.

I am still figuring this out for myself, but it looks fairly simple. Double check my theory and let me know what you think.

man thats really interesting... when i was hooking up the throttle cable i noticed it doesnt actually open the butterfly valve all the way only about half then i noticed the drag of the servo motor thanks for the heads up im putting the tranny in in a few days then the last thing is the wiring which i have already identified most of it. i got ahold of a complete fuel pump, sender assembly from a 2003 tacoma it has the vapor pressure sensor on it too. My plan is to get it running first (with the etcs wire hooked up to a 15 amp fuse) then dial in the evap system. I already have all the vsvs hooked up under the hood that connect to the tank, and evap canister in the rear so its just a matter of connecting them right. SO the way i look at it there will be 2 wires coming from the pressure sensor mounted on the tank, there's another vsv on the canister itself so trace two more wires there, then figure out how it all ties into the throttle position sensor/throttle body?

kinda off topic but i have a pre runner 1997 ranger that had a donor truck (2003) with 2000 miles on it I just swapped over everything from front to rear all harnesses, etc. I was able to pass the calif smog ref with flying colors! SO this toyota swap is a little more tricky because we are actually patching a newer more complicated (2003 ) harness into a vintage style evap sytem we can do it!
