My truck had a heart transplant

800 mile update
Did my 500-600 mile oil & filter change the day after x-mas. Actually had 642 miles when I did the change and the oil looked good, still clear and amber colored. I have a little over 800 miles on the engine right now, so the next oil change is in a little under 1200 miles and then the engine is officially broken in.
So far I've had zero issues on the engine and it runs like a champ. Anyone sitting on the fence on whether to do the swap would be encouraged to do it, absolutely no question about it.
So far, no swap related problems at all. On the electrical side, everything works. All gauges, lights, etc... work. The fuse block under the left side kick panel was shorting out so I replaced that, but that wasn't swap related. Because of the age of the truck I probably should expect some electrical problems to pop up. I'm in the middle of the Big 3 upgrade and installing a Blue Sea fuse block & bus connector for redundancy and reliabilty.
I bought an OEM transfercase mount that will be installed when I get a cross-member fabbed. The one I'm running is works great, but at idle it transmits more vibration than I like. Being my DD, I'll sacrifice the offroad benefits for comfort.
So far I couldn't be happier with the swap, regardless of the expense.
Next update when the engine is broken in.

congatulations on getting past the registration! i had my own little misadventure this past week trying to remain legal, but i just got my tags in the mail yesterday! my troubles were nowhere near as bad as yours, though.
have you put your ORS crossover back in yet?
how about "89 3.4"?

No, but I actually never thought about that one. I'm gonna see if that is available.
Funny thing about the cross-over pipe. As soon as I got home from the DMV the entire "ref spec" exhaust system fell off and must have bounced into the bushes. I can't find it anywhere, so I was forced to reinstall the hi flow exhaust, including the ORS cross-over
Oh, wrong

Question on CARB approved Downey headers, would they still cause you to fail since the exhaust runs down both sides? Would I have to have the cat on the passenger side? I was going to go with the headers to hopefully simplify things a bit and for hopefully better performance. I'm in SD county and I need to find out what folks here have done to pass the BAR.

All aftermarket emission devices must have an EO number to be legal, so the Downeys are ok.
As far as the exhaust routing goes, type in your zip code here:
http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/Applicat...ZipLookup.aspx
to see what program area you are in. If you are in the Enhanced program area I would count on the same exhaust routing configuration hassle I went through, and your only ref station choices are probably San Diego, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, and Riverside. I would go talk to one of the refs and ask them specifically about the exhaust configuration issue before going any further.

One more thing. If you have a Scangauge II, don't go to the ref with it hooked up. The ref almost failed me at my last visit because it is a device that reads and overwrites data in the ECU. He mentioned that but let me slide anyways.

Thanks for the extremely valuable info. Good to know about the Downeys. I checked and I am unfortunately in an enhanced area. I will try to find out where the referee station is for my county and go talk to them before I get the exhaust done but at least I can put the motor in with the headers and not have to worry about a x-over.
If I have it one way for the referee, does it have to be that way every smog check or can I change the side of the cat after I get the sticker?
I'm not familiar with the Scangauge, is it something that I'll need and what specifically is it helpful for?
