lmao. so are you going to have to do that every year? i was told here that i'd more than likely have the same trouble next year, but at least i know what i'm in for. in hindsight it actually wasn't that bad of an experience, but i'll save my tale for my thread(whenever i make myself finish it).

as for the guess, oh well. now... SPIT IT OUT!

I'm not familiar with the Scangauge, is it something that I'll need and what specifically is it helpful for?
The Scangauge II is a handy little device that gets lots of info from your ECU. Not something you will need, but nice to have.

My wife takes our vehicles for their smog tests and she says all they ever do is a quick look under the hood and onto the dyno they go. If you go driving in with obvious aftermarket parts that have no EO stickers or numbers then that will be a red flag to the smog tech and you can expect not to pass. In California there are 3.4 swaps that were approved with the exhaust routed down the driver side of the vehicle, so I don't see any problem with future smog tests. I do have a safety net to fall back on however. I can change the trucks registration address to my wife's parent's condo address in June Lake. There is no smog testing in that county

jskijoe - part of San Diego is also in the change of ownership smog program too.

Nice. That sure is a clean truck. Reminds me of when I bought mine. It sure was nice for a few months. Then the pinstriping started, then the dents, then the flop, LOL!

Wheels and tires look good.

BTW, how does the scangauge override the stock ECU? All it does it read the stock ECU, it does NOT alter it. All it can do is clear codes.

I just got them, so the only dirt they've seen is whats on the street. It'll be at least another month until I get the front diff regeared (with another ARB), so 4x4 is out of the question till then. As soon as things dry up a little though I'll head out to the Cleghorn area and give them a 2wd spin. Street manners are pretty good. You can hear them but they aren't loud at all, and they actually stick to wet pavement better than the Dunlop ATs I took off. They handle good and don't do anything funny. They are fairly heavy though.

It clears codes and retrieves data but does not alter anything else in the ECU. Besides all of the built-in gauges, it has a feature that allows up to 10 user programmable commands that you can send to the ECU. I'll have to check this out when I have some free time.

Transfercase mount

Something I've been wanting to take care of is vibration issue when the truck is stopped and idling with the transmission in drive. When I'm at idle and in drive, the cab interior vibrates and the dash, cab panels, etc.. groan, creak and you basically get a low rpm massage. With the weight of a passenger loading the other side, it gets worse, and with the new Toyo MTS it got worse yet. I've been using this transfercase mount and it is the culprit:

https://www.yotatech.com/50842399-post55.html

It does not allow any movement and all engine & drivetrain motion is transfered directly to the frame. With the transfercase now being essentially a rigid, fixed point almost dead center in the cab, any change to suspension loading and weight in the cab dramatically changes this vibration.

So I just picked up a new Toyota OEM transfercase mount and machined a new adapter plate for it. I just needed to add a counterbore and through hole for the limit knob. All vibration disappeared, including some that I didn't really notice when accelerating or cruising at highway speed. My truck is now glass smooth from idle to highway speeds.

The 4X Innovations mount is a nice, well built component, but for use on a dd with an automatic transmission it is not the way to go. If my truck had a manual tranny this problem wouldn't exist. The vibration and rumbling at idle only occurred when in drive. In neutral or park there was a slight amount of vibration, not offensive but just there, but not the rumbling mini earthquake when in drive.

While I'm here posting, yesterday I put in my first long distance drive since the swap. Up to Newbury Park and back, almost exactly 100 miles each way. All freeway, going through L.A. was stop and go. Once out of L.A. the 101 is short and long grades. Nothing dramatically steep, just power sucking grades. The 3.4 didn't even notice the grades. With the ScanGuage II, I keep track of the water temp and it stayed at 193 degs on the 101. On surface streets it stays between 186 - 188 degs. Needless to say, I'm extremely happy with this swap. As of today I have another 138 miles to go to reach the 2k engine and transfercase break-in (I rebuilt both before starting the swap). The rear diff reached its 500 mile break-in on the way back last night, so today is oil change day.

Cadman, Do you want to get rid of that mount. I was thinking of giving it a try. I have a manual with dual cases and I really need something stiffer.

CADMAN: do you have pictures of your engine bay totally completed? I'd like to see your final layout of the engine bay. Thanks. One of the cleanest swaps I've seen.

Great work cadman! I've been watching your swap closely and I thank you for documenting so well. It is proving to be helpful as I'm in the middle of my swap now. Since I'm just south of you in San Diego, I'm going to have to referee also and that info was definitely the most helpful.

edit:

Did you switch your exhaust back to your desired setup yet post-ref?

Thanks for the compliments. Yes, after I passed the ref and got my BAR sticker I re-installed MY original exhaust (ORS X-over, Magnaflow cat & muffler, driver side routing).

A good contact for you with referee questions would be TC yota on the TTORA message board. He's in Escondido and was going through the referee process for his swap too. Last I read his cross over passed but his cat failed. He hasn't posted whether or not he passed yet, but you can get an update from him. You will most likely go to the same referee as he did. Good luck on your swap and post a write up with pics.

Thanks for the heads up...I'm not on that forum but I would like to get in touch with him. I'm trying to limit the # of these forums I'm on, I can't keep up but for this I think I'll join...I've heard bad things about the one close to me so I'm going to the one that is further south.

I'm collecting pictures now and will post them and focus on particulars that I learned since a lot of the info I'm using already comes from guys like you, mt_goat, & Breknraj

Since ORS closed I've had to source all the parts piece by piece but I luckily ordered the wiring harness a while ago so that helps. I'm going to document all the part numbers I used also (I thought somebody did that already but I couldn't find it on here)

edit:
Also, how tall is your body lift? I was going to go for a 1 inch or 1.5 from 4crawler...any thoughts?
