Can I use a 3.4 torque converter with the 3.0 transmission?

I checked ps fluid and the level is fine.

yes u can use the 3.4 TC on the A340H (3.0 Trans) Torque converters are matched to engines more then transmissions. They obviously have to be setup for certain functions with the transmission like TC lockup, but overall their function is setup based on engines. I Used a A340F (3.4 trans) TC with my A340H.

See now I followed some other bad advice on this forum. I had a chance to take the 3.4 TC with the engine for free but didnt because I was told it wouldnt work.

most likely the stall speed on the A340H TC will be different then the TC for the A340F. I'm not sure whether this would be a higher or lower stall speed as i do not have any specs for the TC's but most likely this will be the only difference between the TC's as the rest of the transmission operation between the A340H and A340F are nearly identical except for transfercase.

Snapped a cross member bolt tonight. This pisses me off because I had them all turning loose last week.

Just an 18" breaker bar. They were turning free before. First bolt I got back to just snapped straight away. Doubling my annoyance was one of them on the same side came out with just fingers.

Anyway there is fluid pooled in the bell housing. I need to ask a few questions.

First, the input shaft. As everyone knows there are 2 sets of splines, one for the pump and one for the shaft itself. The outer is the oil pump I believe. It is rock solid, no movement. The inner, longer shaft is for drive. This has end play - maybe up to .075in. If anyone has their 340f out right now could you wiggle the input shaft part that is longest and give me an idea of the end play?

Second the torque converter. I can move the ring that connects with the thickest part of the input shaft. It goes off center and it feels slightly rough when rotating (that part maybe my imagination). Could someone confirm on their torque converter if the spline grooved rings rotate smoothly and stay on center?

I think I need a new input shaft and TC. Anyone have a good condition TC?

Arrgghh. Snapped 2 more bolts. 1 on a sway bar mount and the other on the transfer switch.

I cannot get the tranny past the sway bar. I hangs up. I dare not try to remove any more sway bar bolts - a second is already showing signs of snapping.

If its showing signs you may as well snap it and replace. It'll snap on its own eventually won't it if thats the case? Probably in the middle of nowhere.

I have my tranny out. Not sure what you mean exactly but I could measure things for ya. My torque converter is still on though if that matters. The assembly is laying here on the ground.

You are a star!!! I missed this post. I've been refreshing looking for bolded thread titles and not seeing any. I was getting more and more depressed.

If you are ok with it, would you pm me your phone number and maybe we could talk?

Ok, these are big pictures but the detail is needed.

This is the TC. You can see the first ring of spline grooves. It looks off center. This ring moves around in the TC and I can wiggle it in every direction. Does your TC do this?

This is the swarf around the input shaft. It looks like the seal is getting rubbed. There is a small amount of swarf in between the shaft and seal but I think its getting pushed in there, not coming from there. I think the swarf is possible from the TC. There are no metal particles in any of the fluid I've looked in.

You can also see both shafts in this pic. The outer shaft, that doesnt protrude as far from the case is for the oil pump. This part doesnt not have any movement at all. The inner, longer, thinner shaft has no side to side movement but does have front to back movement. Does yours have this movement?

It would not come out so I started trying to remove the sway bar to drop the tranny to get it out and on the bench. I snapped 3 bolts and rounded the last. Its still in there. I gave up and went Christmas shopping instead. Since then I've not looked at it in case I get seriously pissed off. I cant drop the tranny out without removing the sway bar and I cant remove the sway bar. Grrr! I have 4 bolt shafts to get out and 2 exhaust hangers to replace, and then what ever is wrong with the tranny has to get fixed. Oh, and I also snapped the bolt that holds the transfer 4x4 hi lo switch.

Its 3 of those 4 bolts in the frame that have snapped. I haven't been back to destroy the 4th yet! My garage is a balmy 12 degrees! My wonderful wife did buy my a garage heater for Christmas though.

Eh, next week I'll get back to it.
