ID numbers on motor

You guys know of any identifying numbers on a 3.4 motor? I've never seen any but I've never really looked, or rebuilt one.

Just curious.

I would think there has to be some sort of way to identify things in case the engine builders have a bad day and forget maybe a piston or two.

Like you I have never really looked

Manual says there is an engine vin# tag above the oil filter.
