Finale

Hey all, I've been working on my swap for awhile now and its getting ot the final process of the wiring. I have bought the EWD from TIS but am having quite the troubles deciphering them. I have a 1998 M/T Harness and cant find all the pinouts. It looks as if i only have the 3 plugs that go directly into the ECM and just one other for the engine-to-body harness. If anybody has done this pinout location and can help with the final pins i havent been able to figure out that would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

A couple questions first...
  1. What's the model and options for your 98 M/T harness?
  2. What year, model, and options is your ECU?

I have only looked at the 96 and 97 4Runner EWDs but hopefully the 98 won't be too different.

Let me see if I can explain things....

- Open the Engine Control EWD, and go to the first page where they have the "ENGINE CONTROL MODULE" (ECM)
- On the left side of the box (that represents the ECM) there should be some text such as "E5 (A), E6 (B)..." the "E5" is the name of the connector, and the "A" is a shortened name for the same connector.
- If you look at the lines going into/out of the ECM, there will be a letter in a circle, that letter is the shortened name for the connectors, as defined on the left (as stated above).
- To the immediate left of the the letter inside a circle, there is a number, that number is the pin number.
- In the case of the 96 and 97 4Runners (not sure about your 98), there are 2 of these letter/circle/number combinations stacked one above the other. If you look to the far right of the page there is an "(M/T)" and "(A/T)". The row that has the M/T are all the manual pins and connectors, while the row with the A/T are for the automatic pins and connectors.

- From there, on some of the wires (the colored lines running all over the pages) there are small rectangles with 2 carrots ("^") pointing into one side of them. These are connectors that mate 2 wire harnesses together. The text inside the rectangle is the connector name, the number to the left of the rectangle is the pin number. I could be wrong, but I believe the 2 carrots correspond to the male side of the connector.

So, now knowing this, you can create your own custom pin out guide.
- Open a spreadsheet (Excel, Open Office Calc, Libre Office Calc, Google Docs/Drive Spreadsheet, the choice is yours).
- Create a tab for each of the connectors, label it accordingly.
- Write down all the pin numbers, 1-26, or 1-18, or however pins that connector has.
- Then write down the wire color in the next column, then make a note of what that wire's connected to.
- Do this for all your connectors, mainly the connectors between the engine and dash harness of your donor (3.4) and your recipient (3.0/22re).
- From there you can easily match similar functions between your donor and recipient harnesses to build your conversion harness.

I'm sure I glossed over something while detailing something that didn't need it, but hopefully this helps you, and feel free to ask any questions.

And, by the way, no body's going to give you the answers you're looking for, this swap is a learning experience and in the future when you have issues, you'll appreciate knowing whats going on...especially when every shop refuses to work on an engine that's been swapped.
