With the 98 auto harness you can use a 98 4runner or taco manual ecu and it will work no prob. Not sure if the auto ecu will work.
Fyi this only works on 98's.

Depends on your definition of "works". It'll run and function but you will get a check engine light that won't go away.
In some states that is an automatic failure for smog.

How are you guys "fooling" the auto ecu? I assume you are connecting the NSW from the ECU to the 7.5A Start circuit?

Or is there more.. I just wired a swap but wasn't able to see it fire. It is not getting spark and i'm wondering if I still need to fool this ECU somehow. I haven't had a chance to trouble shoot anything else but trying to do some homework till I can get back to the shop.

The wiring diagram is identical between the 98 auto and 98 manual ECU's I have looked, if your getting a check engine light I would like to know what code for.

As for making the auto ecu work with the manual tranny you will have one code po1700 which will not go away because of the lack of a rear trans speed sensor resulting in a check engine light but will not effect the engine systems.

The others can be fooled with 3 resistors for the shift solenoids and the trans temp sensor just plug it back into the harness.
Jump neutral and park wires or run them to a clutch cancel switch I never did.

Im running a 96 auto computer and harness. I didnt fool anything but i do have check engine light for 2 or 3 shift solenoids and a trans fluid temp sensor. Truck runs great other than that. I just unhooked engine light wire to dash. (Purple wire) nj only looks for engine light after 96 models. Obd1 stuff doesnt matter. I have good inspection sticker and nobody even noticed. I almost passed with no cat, but inspector was looking all over for it. I had to put aftermarket cat on to pass.
