Another 3.4 lives and breathes

Fired my swap up after about 6 months of slow progress but constant progress.
1994 4Runner 3.0 M/T swapped in a 1999 Tacoma M/T motor using one of the final ORS conversion harnesses (would be ordering another one now if they were still around for my 1982). Started after the third turn of the key and sounded great coming out of the Downey headers.

No real pictures or progress notes but this forum has been invaluable.

I think I am going to have to change my stock 3.0 fan/fan clutch (hitting on the power steering bolt holding the pulley) to an electric unit. I don't have the 1999 fan or I would try it.

Other than the fan issue that it was extremely gratifying to hear it start again. Thanks for the good info you guys have written up.

Good job.

You know, I never had a fan/ps pump issue, I can close my hood with no rubbing and I dont have a body lift and my alternator doesnt rub on the steering shaft. Seems mine somehow fits in the engine bay differently to everyone elses.

Awesome job, Just got mine all tied up and running.

I am with UKrunner, mine i had no clearance issues. The hood fits with just cutting the supports out, no body lift.

I heard that ORS may be coming back, offering some stuff for the 3.4 swap.

My hood had to be cut about 2 by 4 inches over the front, driver's side corner of the intake plenum. No supports were cut. I have no clearance issues with fan or Power steering. The alternator just sits up against the plastic guard around the sterring shaft. I will probably just remove that plastic. No body lift.

From inside the cab looking through the hole in the hood while driving, the motor "rolls" up and over toward the passenger side slightly while driving.

no body lift. did have to cut some of the hood support because the vacuum configuration on top of the plenum was rubbing, but no actual hole that requires a hood scoop. my alternator also sits up against the steering guard, which i might cut, or not; doesn't really seem like a big deal, especially 18,000 miles later.

definitely never had any ps pump/fan issues. that seems strange to me. i can tell you that the 95 3.0 fan and clutch are identical to the 00 3.4 fan and clutch. i actually sold my 3.0 setup to someone with a 99 taco that had been wrecked. the only issue i had was the fan hitting the fan shroud. i just trimmed a little off of the shroud to take care of that. maybe you should take a closer look at the pump before you go out and spend more money...

I have the fan issue figured out. When I had the motor out and did the timing belt, water pump etc. I must have or the previous owner must have slipped a washer, ONE WASHER, onto one of the studs and it was throwing my fan at an angle towards the ps pulley. Disassembled it down to the pulley in preparation for a ford electric fan mod and found the rogue washer. Reassembled correctly and it works like a champ now.

On the 3.4 harness going down the drivers side along with the O2 sensors can anyone tell me what those plugs got to? I think one might be a speed sensor (which I have covered by ORS) and possibly 4Wheel switch reverse light (again both covered by my ORS). Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

I think I have all the plugs figured out except for one. Blue Plug (female) white wire with a black stripe and one gray wire.

I also have a slow persistent leak, drip from the bottom hose connected to my 3.0 canister. I think I have it hooked up correctly. Other than that I am pretty happy. Exhaust maybe next week.

Got the gas drip figured out. I had the "fuel return line" and the "to tank" from the 3.0 charcoal canister on the wrong hard lines going back to the tank. Switched those two and no more fuel drip, so far. Going to the exhaust shop today and will try to post up some completed pics after that.

The only lingering problem is a dead temp gauge. I know the one gauge worked in my cluster with my 3.0 motor so I am not sure if it is a bad sender or ORS related wiring problem. Any ideas?
