88 4runner Not getting power from ignition switch (starter relay)

88 5speed 4runner wont crank. I have narrowed it down to the wire coming from the ignition switch. The ignition switch itself is putting out 12v but somewhere in between the switch and the body plug, it is losing power. I am certain it is because the starter relay is not hooked up. The starter relay on my 88 is in the engine bay thus it was apart of the engine harness. Can I just run a wire from my ignition switch to my sta/starter trigger wire? That would cut out the starter relay. I'm not sure what the point of the starter relay is. If I'm not mistaken people who swapped a manual transmission for an auto dont have a starter relay.

Would it be safe to run my rig without a starter relay? I think I am just going to run a wire from the ignition switch to the starter trigger/sta. The engine would crank just fine before the swap. I'm thinking it has to be because I dont have the relay wired up.

The starter relay just send a signal to the starter that it's time to do work. But it's not run directly behind the switch. It's run behind a failsafe circuit, your clutch switch. Us auto dudes have a relay too, but it's behind a "park neutral" switch. I don't think there's any reason you cannot just run a wire from ST2 to the relay, and to STA on the ECU. I'd rather see you hook up the "clutch start cancel sw", but you could probably get by doing it the way you said.

What I mean is guys that have swapped from an auto to manual dont have a starter relay unless one is installed after the swap. I guess it wouldn't be too hard to install one. Would a bosch style relay work fine?
